Ukraine needs its F-16s, but it should get Gripen jets to help fight Russia long-term, experts said. A Ukrainian Air Force F-16 fighter jet flies in an undisclosed location in Ukraine on August 4. Submarines could be very useful for defense of Canadian territory, or asserting a presence in contested Arctic waters. But tripling Canada's submarine fleet will require more than buying new boats. AdvertisementThough Canada acquired its first submarine in 1914, its recent experience with undersea boats has not been a happy one. In 1998, the Royal Canadian Navy bought four used British Upholder-class diesel-electric subs that became surplus as Britain switched to an all-nuclear submarine fleet. Several foreign shipbuilders have expressed interest in selling subs to Canada, including South Korea's Hanwha Ocean and Sweden's Saab.

It was reported by Politico in February that delivery wouldn't take place until later in 2023. Ukraine needs GLSDB to augment the limited number of 100-mile range ATACMS rockets the U.S. has sent. Because the contract to begin production of GLSDB was signed in March, according to a Pentagon statement to Reuters, delivery was forced towards year-end. The decision to send the long-range rocket, something the U.S. government hasn't purchased for itself, followed a proposal last summer from Boeing Co (BA.N) to U.S. commanders in Europe managing weapons for Ukraine. GLSDB is made jointly by Sweden's SAAB AB (SAABb.ST) and Boeing Co (BA.N).

WASHINGTON, Oct 27 (Reuters) - The Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 is starting to boost defense contractors' revenues, as customers such as the U.S. government restock supplies shipped to Ukraine and countries around Europe arm themselves with an eye on Moscow's aggressions. New contracts to supply Ukraine directly - or backfill U.S. weapons sent to Ukraine - were signed late last year, and now revenue is flowing to the big defense contractors. "We've gone from 14,000 (artillery) rounds per month to 20,000 very quickly. The General Dynamics' Combat Systems unit, which makes armored vehicles, tanks and the artillery Ukraine uses, saw its revenue rise almost 25% versus the same period a year ago. Third-quarter sales for Northrop Grumman's (NOC.N) Defense Systems segment rose 6% on high demand for ammunition and rocket motors used in guided multiple-launch rocket systems (GMLRS), which play a crucial role in supporting Ukraine's defense efforts against Russian forces.

TT News Agency/Henrik Montgomery via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsCOPENHAGEN, Sept 12 (Reuters) - The Swedish government is considering donating Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine to help it fight Russia, Swedish public radio (SR) reported on Tuesday, citing unnamed sources. The government wants to know, among other things, how a handover would affect Sweden's defence capabilities and how quickly Sweden could get new Gripen fighters, SR reported. The Netherlands and Denmark have led a push to supply Ukraine with U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets to help counter Russia's air superiority in the war. According to the SR report, Ukraine hopes to receive one division of Gripen jets, made by Sweden's Saab <SAABb.ST>, or 16-18 planes.

The German defence ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The delays to the proposed Franco-German project have strained ties already tested by differences over energy topics and the question to what extent Europe should become independent from the U.S. in its security policy. The defence ministry in Paris and the office of President Emmanuel Macron did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It cited French government sources as saying the topic would be raised at Franco-German government consultations scheduled for the start of October.

June 28 (Reuters) - U.S. conglomerate Honeywell (HON.O) said on Wednesday it had agreed to acquire Swedish aerospace firm Saab's (SAABb.ST) heads-up display (HUD) assets to strengthen its avionics unit. The HUDs will be integrated into aircraft cockpit systems, adding features such as wide field-of-view, high image resolution, low system latency and lower weight. The HUD system helps pilots with increased situational awareness, especially at night or in difficult weather conditions. "Heads-up displays have been known to reduce pilot workload, increase situational awareness, improve access to airports with enhanced flight vision system and safety," said Vipul Gupta, general manager, avionics, Honeywell Aerospace. USAI stands for Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). Friday's aid pledge opens the door to many more deliveries of the Ground Launched Small Diameter Bombs (GLSDB). When the new rockets arrive, it will mark the first time Ukraine has seen its rocket range grow exponentially since U.S. furnished HIMARS in late-June 2022. HIMARS have a 77 km (48 mile) range and were instrumental in Ukraine's counter offensive against Russian forces, which invaded on Feb. 24, 2022. Reuters was first to report on a Boeing Co (BA.N) proposal to field GLSDB for Ukraine in November.
Feb 1 (Reuters) - The United States is expected to send a new weapon to Ukraine, the Ground Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB), doubling Kyiv's current strike range. Below are some details about the weapon:* Ukraine's longest-range weapon currently is the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS). Its rockets can travel 48 miles (77 kilometers) while the GLSDB's range is 94 miles (151 km). Greater range would allow the Ukrainian military to attack Russian forces from a greater distance or potentially penetrate more deeply into Russian-held territory. * The rocket-powered GLSDB combines the GBU-39 small-diameter bomb, typically dropped from planes, with the M26 rocket motor, both of which are common in U.S. military inventories.

OTTAWA, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Canada finalized a deal to buy 88 F-35 fighter jets from U.S. defense company Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) on Monday in a C$19 billion ($14.2 billion) project to replace its aging fleet of fighter aircraft. Anand said it was the largest investment in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 30 years. The F-35 fighter announcement coincides with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's trip to Mexico on Monday for the North American leaders' summit where he will meet U.S. President Joe Biden. Canada is part of a consortium that helped develop Lockheed Martin's F-35 and Ottawa will pay the same amount for the aircraft as the other participants, including the United States.
Colombia's plan to replace fighter planes hits a snag

BOGOTA, Jan 2 (Reuters) - Initial negotiations between Colombia, France's Dassault Aviation (AM.PA) and Sweden's Saab AB (SAABb.ST) to replace part of the South American country's aging air force fleet have collapsed, the defense minister said on Monday. Colombia, which uses about 20 Israeli-made Kfir aircraft purchased three decades ago, has said replacing the planes is a priority so it can continue to defend its territory, fight organized crime and conduct aerial surveillance. There will be continued efforts this year to see if a purchase is possible, Velasquez said. There have been efforts by various Colombian administrations to replace the Kfir planes for at least 12 years, though the change has been stymied by financial limitations.
