Dec 4 (Reuters) - Pando Asset AG, a digital asset management firm based in Switzerland, last week became the latest issuer to submit an application to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to launch an exchange-traded fund (ETF) tied to spot bitcoin prices. Pando becomes the 13th company vying for a share of what the cryptocurrency world believes could become a multi-billion dollar product, SEC filings showed. Others range from asset management giants like BlackRock and Fidelity to more specialized ETF providers like ARK Investments. Pando is a latecomer to the U.S. spot bitcoin race, but already has three other spot crypto exchange-traded products (ETPs) on the SIX Swiss Exchange. Its ETF proposal included Bank of New York Mellon as the administrator of the Pando Asset Spot Bitcoin Trust.

Storage tanks and gas-chilling units are seen at Freeport LNG, the second largest exporter of U.S. liquified natural gas, near Freeport, Texas, U.S., February 11, 2023. Reuters/Arathy Somasekhar/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsDec 1 (Reuters) - Investors have been piling into an exchange-traded fund (ETF) designed to track U.S. natural gas prices, in spite of the commodity's dismal performance in 2023. The U.S. Natural Gas Fund's (UNG) (UNG.P) price, tied to the performance of futures contracts on the commodity, has plunged 60.7% so far this year, falling 27% in November alone. Analysts said the drop in the ETF's price came alongside a fall in the price of natural gas sparked by milder than usual weather across the United States in recent weeks. Natural gas prices fell about 22% in November, the single largest monthly percentage drop since a 40% decline in January.

The SEC has long rejected spot bitcoin ETF applications on the grounds they do meet its investor protection requirements. Industry hopes that position would shift surged in June when BlackRock (BLK.N), which has an almost unbroken record of SEC ETF approvals, filed for a spot bitcoin ETF. The only prospective issuer to disclose proposed investor fees so far is Ark Investment, which last week announced its spot bitcoin ETF would charge a fee of 0.8%. To be sure, issuers hoping to launch spot bitcoin ETFs have a more bullish outlook than those sticking to the sidelines. Magoon hopes the buzz surrounding a spot bitcoin ETF will draw more assets to Amplify's BLOK ETF.

The Amplify ETF's gains have been driven by top holdings like Affirm Holdings (AFRM.O), up 11.97% on Monday and 97% so far in 2023. The VanEck Retail ETF's holdings include Costco, (COST.O), which gained 0.6% Monday and is up more than 30% so far this year. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF, which has net assets of $396.6 million, recorded weekly outflows of $115.6 in the week ended on Wednesday, according to data from Lipper. Still, the bulk of 2023 returns for investors in U.S. retail ETFs have come in recent weeks. The VanEck Retail ETF (RTH.O) has generated half of its 12.8% year-to-date gains in the last two months. Since 2021, the SEC has rejected multiple applications to issue spot bitcoin ETFs, arguing that the cryptocurrency market is vulnerable to manipulation. In August, a federal court ruled that the SEC wrongly rejected Grayscale Investments' application to convert its Bitcoin Trust into a spot bitcoin ETF. SEC chair Gary Gensler said last month that the SEC is evaluating as many as 10 spot bitcoin ETF proposals. The average fee levied on U.S. ETFs currently hovers around 0.54%, but Ark's proposed fee of 0.80% is significantly lower than the 2% that Grayscale currently charges investors on its spot bitcoin trust. If the SEC does approve some or all of the pending spot bitcoin ETF applications in early January, industry participants and analysts expect a fierce battle for market share to follow.

In August, Nvidia stock soared to all-time highs after the company reported quarterly results. Tuesday's trading in the T-Rex NVDX reflects underlying optimism that Nvidia will deliver another blockbuster earnings report after the market close. Although its price has fallen, reflecting the decline in Nvidia's shares, trading volume has soared to 86 million shares, compared with an average of 26 million. On Wednesday morning, traders will be trading the ETFs based not on the immediate response to the earnings but on Wednesday's activity. "We've seen a 400% jump in average daily trading volume on the day ahead of and following Nvidia's earnings releases," he added.

The Global X MSCI Argentina ETF , which offers exposure to a basket of the country's most liquid stocks, soared more than 13% on Monday and hit its highest level since September. While the South American country's markets are closed on Monday for a local holiday, U.S.-listed shares of Argentinian companies also surged in U.S. trading. The gains for the ETF came through large amounts of small trades, Todd Sohn, an ETF analyst at Strategas in New York, said. By mid-morning, the value of trading in the ETF had topped $11 million, compared with average of about $1 million a day throughout 2023. "These small country funds are ideal vehicles for small day traders who jump on events" like Sunday's presidential election in Argentina, Sohn said.

The Amplify Samsung SOFR ETF , which debuted Wednesday, is the first ETF to track SOFR, the overnight interbank lending rate that has emerged as the U.S. replacement for the now-defunct Libor gauge of overnight borrowing interest costs. The new fund's launch comes amidst a wave of enthusiasm for ultra-short term fixed income ETFs, as yields on products throughout the fixed income spectrum have risen to multi-year highs following an aggressive rate hiking cycle by the Federal Reserve. "It wasn't until this year that rate-driven products became priorities," said Bill Belden, president of Amplify. Flows into money market and ultra-short term products account for about 36% of all inflows into fixed income ETFs this year, though the category represents only 15% of all fixed income ETF assets, according to Matthew Bartolini, head of product research at State Street Global's SPDR Americas ETF division. Belden said that a large institutional investor has provided seed capital of $50 million for the new ETF.

Nov 13 (Reuters) - Fidelity launched a group of six new exchange-traded funds (ETFs) Monday and announced sharp reductions on management fees on nearly a third of its total ETF lineup, kicking off what analysts expect to be another strong week for ETF debuts. So far this year, asset managers have launched 419 ETFs, according to Morningstar Direct, taking 2023 a step closer toward breaking the 2021 record of 475 new ETFs. The move will boost Ark's lineup from eight ETFs to a total of 15. The Fidelity products offer fees of 18 basis points to 28 basis points, compared with an average fee of around 63 basis points for actively managed ETFs, according to Bryan Armour, mutual fund analyst at Morningstar. "These are very, very substantial reductions, and the new fees are very low," said Armour.

BlackRock registered the iShares Ethereum Trust as a Delaware statutory trust on Thursday. Earlier this year, BlackRock registered a bitcoin trust in the same manner and a week later filed an application with the SEC to launch a spot bitcoin ETF. BlackRock declined to comment on the trust's creation or on any plans for an ETF filing. To date, roughly a dozen ETF providers have filed to create spot bitcoin ETFs, or convert existing products into spot ETFs, helping fuel the recent rally in the cryptocurrency. Several other ETF providers that have applied for spot bitcoin ETFs also have sought SEC approval for spot ether ETFs, including Ark Investment Management, Invesco and VanEck.

The SPDR Gold Shares ETF (GLD.P), which tracks the price of gold, has rallied 9.82% this year, driven by concerns about inflation and economic growth as well as geopolitical turbulence. Yet those gains have not been reflected in the share prices of gold miners: the iShares MSCI Global Gold Miners ETF (RING.O) and the VanEck Gold Miners ETF (GDX.AX), which track the shares of gold producers, are up only 2.28% and 1.7% respectively. "Gold prices can only help so much, if you can't produce the gold in the first place," said Islam. Even Barrick Gold, which reported a 3% gain in gold production in the third quarter, said overall output in 2023 won't meet expectations. "Investors seem very wary of stocks as a whole, and gold miners have been tracking that rather than what's happening in gold itself," said Casanova.

Nov 7 (Reuters) - Qraft Technologies on Tuesday launched its fifth exchange-traded fund (ETF) that relies on artificial intelligence to select holdings, continuing its expansion of the niche AI ETF market. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 3 (Reuters) - Global assets invested in exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tied to the spot price of bitcoin now total $4.16 billion, according to CoinGecko, a cryptocurrency data and analysis company. Nearly half of that sum, or $2 billion, is invested in the seven spot bitcoin ETFs that have been launched in Canada since 2021. Canada also is home to the single largest of the 20 ETFs, the Purpose Bitcoin ETF , which has $819.1 million in assets. The SEC has so far denied all spot bitcoin ETF applications, saying applicants have not shown they can protect investors from market manipulation. Mainstream investment giants such as BlackRock (BLK.N) and Fidelity, as well as crypto-focused firms like Grayscale, have filed applications for spot bitcoin ETFs. U.S. crypto firm NYDIG estimates demand for a spot bitcoin ETF at around $30 billion. Their calculation compares the sizes of the gold and bitcoin ETFs - $210 billion versus $28.8 billion, respectively - and adjusts them for their relative volatility. BlackRock declined to comment on its pending spot bitcoin ETF, other than to confirm that it is still awaiting final SEC approval. His forecast is based on how demand evolved in smaller markets where spot bitcoin ETFs already exist, such as Canada.

A Goldman Sachs sign is seen at the New York Stock Exchange April 21, 2010. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 26 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Asset Management (GSAM) has launched a pair of defined outcome exchange-traded funds (ETFs), a group of products that use options strategies to offer upside exposure to stocks while cushioning downside risk. The new funds - the Goldman Sachs S&P 500 Core Premium Income (GPIX.O) and the Goldman Sachs Nasdaq 100 Core Premium Income ETF (GPIQ.O) - will use an options overlay strategy to limit downside risk and generate income, said Michael Crinieri, global head of ETFs at GSAM. "We started looking at developing enhanced income products like these in 2005," said Monali Vora, head of wealth investment solutions at GSAM.

But bitcoin fell sharply after a Fox Business reporter said on the social media platform X that BlackRock denied the report. loadingBlackRock later confirmed to Reuters that "the iShares Bitcoin ETP application is still under review by the SEC." "Crypto markets have just shown how sensitive they are to any potential good news, with their premature rally today on rumors of the approval of a spot bitcoin ETF," said Ben Laidler, global markets strategist at eToro. Crypto markets have been awaiting news on several pending spot bitcoin ETF applications, which, if approved, are widely expected to drive investment in the sector. Oct 12 (Reuters) - Simplify Asset Management plans to roll out three new exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that rely on artificial intelligence rather than human beings to select portfolio holdings, adding to a nascent sub-sector that has so far delivered underwhelming results for investors. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsSept 28 (Reuters) - Investment manager Valkyrie Funds LLC has begun adding ethereum futures to its existing Bitcoin futures exchange-traded fund, after getting the green light from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the company said on Thursday. The renamed Valkyrie Bitcoin and Ether Strategy ETF (BTF.O) will launch on Monday, Valkyrie's chief investment officer Steven McClurg told Reuters. Rival asset managers VanEck and ProShares are looking to offer pure ether futures ETFs, in contrast to Valkyrie's hybrid ETF. The SEC's decision to drop long-held objections to ether futures ETFs is a boost for the crypto industry, which has been pushing the agency to expand the types of crypto ETFs they can offer. Media reports that the SEC was poised to approve ether futures ETFs appears to have been boosting the token's price.
