CNN —Sky-gazers around the world will be able to glimpse a partial lunar eclipse while September’s full harvest moon shines brightly Tuesday night. If you’re viewing the moon on Tuesday evening, for about an hour it will also appear as if a bite has been taken out of it due to a partial lunar eclipse. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when Earth moves between the sun and the full moon without being perfectly aligned. During a total lunar eclipse, Earth’s shadow can turn the moon’s surface a striking red color, which is known as a blood moon, according to NASA. The moon is seen through the clouds during a partial lunar eclipse over Caracas, Venezuela, early on November 8, 2022.

AdvertisementHere are some mistakes you may be making while photographing the moon and how to fix them, according to two professional astrophotographers. Mistake 1: Taking photos at the wrong timeJon Carmichael captured the moon during a lunar eclipse. The silver lining is you can get better detail because you're shooting through less atmosphere and the photos will be clearer. Taking photos closer to sunset gives you more lighting compared to later at night, which will make taking a cellphone picture easier. "If you're shooting in any kind of auto setting, then you're making the camera decide for you," Carmichael said.

A full moon on Tuesday will coincide with a partial lunar eclipse, giving people in North America, South America, Africa and Europe a chance to see part of the moon’s surface obscured by Earth’s shadow. A partial lunar eclipse occurs as Earth passes between the moon and the sun, creating a celestial alignment that blocks sunlight from hitting the lunar surface. It will also be a supermoon, because the moon will be at its closest point to Earth in its elliptical, 27-day orbit. After the peak of the eclipse, the moon will begin exiting Earth’s shadow, ending early Wednesday at around 12:47 a.m. Unlike with solar eclipses, there’s no need to wear protective eyewear when watching a lunar eclipse and it can be viewed safely with the naked eye.

May’s full moon is known as the flower moon, a reference to its appearance in late spring, when many flowering plants begin to bloom again after their winter slumber. The flower moon will begin to rise after sunset on Wednesday, reaching its highest point after midnight, per EarthSky. The flower moon played a minor role in a particularly dark period of US history. Martin Scorsese’s recent Oscar-nominated historical drama “Killers of the Flower Moon” explores a series of murders of Osage people in Oklahoma. The killings began in May 1921, the month of the flower moon.

On Tuesday night, the Lyrids align with the April full moon, otherwise known as the "pink moon," which will rise at 7:49 p.m. It's a stunning sight all on its own, but seeing it during a meteor shower is a rare astronomical opportunity. CNN —The total solar eclipse has come and gone, but sky-gazers have reason to keep looking up — a meteor shower will peak this week right before a full moon rises. The Lyrid meteor shower will be most active Sunday night through the early morning hours of Monday, according to the American Meteor Society. And April’s full moon, also known as the pink moon, reaches the crest of its full phase at 7:49 p.m. The pink moon actually got its moniker due to its annual appearance not long after the start of spring, much like its namesake, a hot pink wildflower called Phlox subulata that blooms in early springtime, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Instead, an annular solar eclipse creates a “ring of fire” in the sky as the sun’s light surrounds the moon.

CNN —A glowing worm moon will light up the sky on Monday with a celestial performance in store for people venturing out in the early morning hours — a penumbral lunar eclipse. The moon looks slightly darker during a 2023 penumbral lunar eclipse in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. It’s not going to be a super dramatic change in what we see in the moon,” Schmoll said. The penumbral eclipse comes about two weeks before a total solar eclipse that will cross Mexico, the United States and Canada on April 8. While a penumbral eclipse is not as dramatic as a total lunar eclipse with the moon appearing an eerie red, there is no special equipment required to view a lunar eclipse such as the viewing glasses needed for a solar eclipse, Schmoll said, allowing for lunar eclipses to be viewed with the naked eye.

CNN —February’s full moon, known as the snow moon, is set to peak on Saturday, shining bright around the world in the night sky. It’ll just be a little bit smaller than your average full moon that you look up at.”The full moon phase occurs when the moon, Earth and the sun are in alignment, in that order. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between Earth and the sun, completely blocking the sun’s face. A total solar eclipse won’t be visible across the contiguous United States again until August 2044. A lunar eclipse, which causes the moon to look dark or dimmed, occurs when the sun, Earth and moon align so that the moon passes into Earth’s shadow.

CNN —The full harvest moon will shine in the early morning hours of September 29, also marking the fourth and final supermoon of 2023. September’s full moon will appear about 5% bigger and 13% brighter than the average full moon, according to NASA. Other monikers for September’s full moon across different indigenous tribes include the corn maker moon from the Abenaki tribe, the moon of the brown leaves from the Lakota people and autumn moon from the Passamaquoddy tribe. Many people associate the harvest moon with being orange in color as it begins to rise, but the same could be said of all full moons. Only part of the moon will pass into shadow as the sun, Earth and moon will not completely align.

Stargazers around the world were treated on Wednesday night to the rare sight of a "blue supermoon" -- a full moon which came unusually close to the earth, making it seem larger and brighter in the night sky. A "blue moon" comes around only -- well, once in a blue moon. A moon is said to be "blue" when it is the second full moon to occur in a calendar month. But a "blue supermoon" is an even rarer lunar event. The last blue supermoon was in 2009, according to NASA -- and the next is not expected until 2037.

A blue supermoon will rise tonight, August 30. A somewhat rare occurrence, the next blue supermoon won't appear until 2037. Similar to Strawberry Moons and Pink Moons, a Blue Moon isn't named for its color. Instead, as the phrase "once in a blue moon" suggests, it's all about timing. Blue Moons are less common: Only one in about 33 moons qualifies.

CNN —August began with a bright supermoon and will end the same way as another one lights up the night sky this week. ET, the bright glow of Saturn will appear about 5 degrees to the upper right of the moon. Over the course of the evening, Saturn will appear to move clockwise around the moon, according to NASA. The second full moon in one month is also known as a blue moon, like the phrase “once in a blue moon,” according to NASA. This results in a blue moon about every 2.5 years, and the last one occurred in August 2021.

The lunar fanfare of August is wrapping up with a treat: a blue supermoon that will occur on Wednesday at 9:36 p.m. Eastern time. The blue moon is the second of two full moons in a single month. Each month usually hosts only one full moon, but blue moons sometimes arise because the lunar cycle is 29.5 days long — just short of the length of an average calendar month. What is a blue supermoon? A supermoon occurs when the full moon phase of the lunar cycle syncs up with the perigee, or when it is nearest to the Earth.

The result could be a big blow to a state still dealing with lingering damage from last year's Hurricane Ian. She had a message for the almost 900 residents who were under mandatory orders to evacuate the island near the coast of the Big Bend region. More than a dozen state troopers went door to door warning residents that storm surge could rise as high as 15 feet (4.5 meters). At 2 p.m. EDT Tuesday, Idalia was about 240 miles (390 kilometers) south-southwest of Tampa, with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (150 kph), the National Hurricane Center said. Idalia's initial squalls were being felt in the Florida Keys and the southwestern coast of Florida on Tuesday afternoon, including at Clearwater Beach.
