GM's electric vehicles got access to Tesla Superchargers last month. AdvertisementFor the better part of a week, I was the lone Chevy at my local Tesla Superchargers. Before I could offer to help, a flock of Tesla owners amassed to troubleshoot with him. Access to Elon Musk's charging network is the latest improvement GM has made to charging access for electric vehicle owners. For a long time, the Supercharger network was a selling point for EV shoppers worried about range anxiety.

Little details in design make the Equinox EV feel special. Equinox EV doesn't sacrifice style for function, offering a ton of storage space. AdvertisementI drove the new Chevrolet Equinox EV for a few days, and some features quickly jumped out as my favorites. This isn't the first time I've been behind the wheel of the Equinox EV — I first drove the crossover SUV over the summer on a short, pre-planned route. From charging to styling to unexpected features, the Equinox EV has worked nicely as a family hauler built for suburban life.

A row of Tesla superchargers is shown at a supercharging location in Los Angeles on June 5, 2024. Tesla shares saw more gains in premarket trading Wednesday, after jumping 10% in the previous session following the release of second-quarter vehicle production and deliveries figures that beat analyst expectations. Tesla's total deliveries hit 443,956 vehicles in the second quarter, with total production at 410,831 vehicles over the period. Analysts had expected that Tesla deliveries — the closest approximation of sales disclosed by the automaker — to reach 439,000 in the three-month stretch ending on June 30, according to a consensus of estimates compiled by FactSet StreetAccount. In a Tuesday note, Citi analysts said they anticipate a "favorable share price reaction" following the release.

London CNN —A British startup may have found the answer to one of the frustrations of driving an electric car — waiting around for the battery to charge. That is much faster than the 20 minutes or so it currently takes some electric cars using a fast charger, such as a Tesla (TSLA) Supercharger. Nyobolt’s battery is compatible with a Supercharger, the startup told CNN. “This is many multiples higher than the warranties of much larger EV batteries on the road today,” it noted. In addition, there are currently “a lot of unknowns” with the niobium battery technology, he told CNN.

The move coincides with broader restructuring due to falling sales and increased competition, resulting in a 32% drop in the stock price this year. Tesla is being sued by the nonprofit Environmental Democracy Project, which alleges "ongoing failure to comply with the Clean Air Act" at the electric vehicle company's assembly plant in Fremont, California. The latest lawsuit in California described Tesla's environmental violations as "ongoing" and said that residents and employees in the surrounding area have been exposed to "excess amounts of air pollution, including nitrogen oxides, arsenic, cadmium, and other harmful chemicals." The Bay Area Air Quality Management District, an environmental regulator, recently accused Tesla of allowing "unabated emissions" in Fremont that should have been prevented. Air pollution from the assembly plant is the result of equipment that frequently breaks down, allowing emissions to vent directly into the air without proper filtration, regulators have said. Additionally, Tesla employees or contractors have allegedly shut off air pollution controls in the factory, particularly when the company was having trouble with other paint shop equipment.

Tesla has laid off most of its charging team, causing confusion about the future of its Supercharger network. Virtually all major automakers have adopted Tesla's charging techTesla has committed to doubling its network size in-party with public money. Advertisement"I got a bounce from every email address," said Andres Pinter, co-CEO of Bullet EV Charging Solutions, which has about a dozen ongoing projects underway for Tesla. The automakers Tesla partnered with can already access existing plugs, but the recent layoffs raise questions about the network's future growth. Perhaps that's not enough to offset the costs of rapidly building new Supercharger stations that will ultimately benefit other carmakers, as well as Tesla.

Tesla owners have told me for years that the Supercharger network was a huge selling point, and this trip proved that to be true. On the return trip, I simply plugged in a Supercharger along my route into the computer and headed down the road. The truck immediately began charging at warp speed compared to my other two tries, adding 140 miles of range every hour. I dropped off the truck with about 125 miles of range right next to a Supercharger. On my next road trip in an EV, I'll double-check my adapters — and not count on random ones to get the job done.

Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesBEIJING — Chinese electric car company Nio has been expanding its battery swap partnerships in a bid to gain an edge on the infrastructure side of the EV ecosystem. Nio also announced agreements earlier this year to work with two local battery companies on battery swap services. While having a large network of battery charging stations helps address those concerns, battery swapping is a faster method as it takes only a few minutes. CLSA's Luo said businesses also prefer to invest in normal charging stations than swap stations because they make a higher return.
