Generally, a Trump win is seen as positive for financials given a higher likelihood of deregulation for companies in the space. Traditional oil and gas names are also likely to benefit under a second Trump presidency. One is made up of stocks that benefit after a Harris win; the other would outperform under a second Trump presidency. However, a Harris win is expected to keep current regulation measures in place, and possibly introduce new ones. Private equity giants KKR and Blackstone would also benefit under a Trump win.

"The differences between Trump and Harris are as wide as we have ever seen." Differences in trade policy specifically, he said, are going to "determine where growth and earnings take place around the world." In contrast to Trump's trade policy, reduced trade tensions under Harris could lead to gains for FedEx , which has advanced more than 8% this year. During that debate, Harris also accused Trump of gearing up to abandon support of Ukraine. If Harris were to win the election, Clifton believes RTX is beneficiary of continued U.S. support of Ukraine.

Last Thursday, 87% of S & P 500 stocks outperformed the index itself, which Goldman Sachs called "the most in the history of our data set." Its total gain of 57%, measured by the S & P 500, is almost exactly half the post-1929 average too. For good measure, this year the S & P 500 has posted the best-ever start to a presidential election year. Arguably something close to it is already priced in to a considerable degree, with the S & P 500 pushing 22-times forward earnings again. The elevated sentiment backdrop is par for the course for a bull market, but sometimes associated with pauses or pullbacks.

Hedge funds are still leaning into the "Magnificent Seven" trade even with the broader stock market indexes recently hitting record highs. A May 24 note from the Goldman Sachs prime brokerage said that the Big Tech exposure at hedge funds reached a new high last week. The rising exposure is caused by both trading activity and higher share prices for the Big Tech stocks, particularly Nvidia . Net flows into the Magnificent Seven stocks have been positive in May, according to the Goldman prime brokerage data, though last week was more neutral. The five biggest stocks in the S & P 500 — all of which are members of the Magnificient 7 — account for roughly 27% of the S & P 500, according to Strategas Research Partners.

"We believe the recent back up in rates is probably the last best opportunity to extend duration," wrote Gargi Pal Chaudhuri, chief investment and portfolio strategist, Americas, at BlackRock. Generally speaking, the value of a bond goes up as interest rates go down, with longer-dated bonds seeing the biggest gains. While bond funds have been seeing inflows this year, there are still plenty of investors with excess cash in short-term accounts. Different funds that offer that type of exposure include the iShares 3-7 Year Treasury Bond ETF (IEI) , the SPDR Portfolio Intermediate Term Treasury ETF (SPTI) and the Vanguard Intermediate-Term Treasury ETF (VGIT) . Investors shouldn't go overboard with adding duration, because the long-term bonds on the market carry extra risk, Akullian said.
