Trump’s turn to bask in Musk’s reflected glory
  + stars: | 2024-11-20 | by ( Stephen Collinson | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +12 min
Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX visionary, has spent the last two weeks basking in Trump’s reflected glory at Mar-a-Lago. He’s around so much it’s almost like he’s family, and he even made it into a photo of Trump’s extended clan. Trump’s growing cultural cloutTrump’s visit to Musk’s launchpad was also the latest occasion since the election when he has inserted himself into high-profile photo-ops. The hit perhaps reflects Trump’s starry-eyed infatuation with Musk’s amazing array of spaceships and limitless ambition. With Musk, Trump might get more than he bargained for.

CNN —Officials in Texas are set to vote Tuesday on a new public school curriculum that incorporates lessons from the Bible as early as kindergarten, that provoked criticism from advocacy groups and families across the state. The state Board of Education will vote on revisions to its K-5 reading and English language arts materials, part of Bluebonnet Learning, the Texas Education Agency-developed open education resources. We don’t leave Texans behind.”Ghani also argued that Texas public school teachers are already “overburdened” with the amount of material they’re expected to teach. “But inserting faith-based lessons into public school classrooms, which sounds like what is intended here, is not the study of history or literature. The legislature has also pushed to require that public school classrooms display the Ten Commandments.

Courtesy Riley familyProsecutors have said a variety of forensic, digital and video evidence presented during the trial will point to Ibarra as Riley’s killer. The evidence includes a jacket police found in a dumpster near where Ibarra lived, which prosecutors say had both Ibarra’s and Riley’s blood on it. FBI Special Agent Jamie Hipkiss also testified about cellphone data he examined, which included photos on a phone connected to Ibarra from the early morning of Feb. 22. On Friday during opening statements, Ibarra’s defense attorneys said there was not enough evidence to prove Ibarra was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Beneath the snowy slopes lay a prehistoric surprise: an ecosystem that predates the dinosaurs, revealed by melting snow before being stumbled upon by a hiker in the Italian Alps. Intrigued, she snapped photos and shared them with her friend, Elio Della Ferrera, a nature photographer. Della Ferrera then contacted Dal Sasso, at the museum in Milan, to learn more about the discovery. These environmental shifts contributed to the extinction of many species, which we may now encounter as fossils on a fortunate hike. “The past has much to teach us about what we risk doing to the world today,” the researchers warned.

Instead of killing jobs, generative AI is fueling a surprising job boom, according to the venture capitalist Marc Andreessen. OpenAI and Google are struggling to significantly improve their next AI models, multiple media reports said this week. That's what makes these AI models smart, and without that, OpenAI and others are hitting a worrying wall. They're a function of the training data," Andreessen said. "And a big part of the AI hiring boom is actually hiring the experts to actually craft the answers to be able to train the AI."

Builders, meanwhile, are luring buyers with some perks but are barely budging on prices. That's partly because these companies have another place to turn: the rental market. Opportunistic investors — mostly small and midsize players, who own the vast majority of single-family rentals in the country — are happy to oblige. Builders have also started developing entire communities of single-family homes to be rented out rather than sold, a strategy known as build-for-rent. Their embrace of the rental market says more about the obstacles for buyers than for builders.

While it’s vital to study negative emotions such as fear and stress, positive experiences also shape the brain in significant ways. As animals – human or otherwise – navigate the unpredictability of life, anticipating positive experiences helps drive a persistence to keep searching for life’s rewards. That’s a lesson my lab rats have taught me well.

The coming reign of the only child
  + stars: | 2024-11-11 | by ( Ann Friedman | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +16 min
American women are having kids later in life, leaving less time to bear multiple children. American women in general are having children later, but the delay is most pronounced among the most educated. Even religious conservatives, who are biblically motivated to be fruitful and multiply, are starting families later and more often having only one child. So what will the coming reign of the only child mean for America? Just as having children is no longer seen as a required stage of adulthood, having siblings will no longer be a de facto part of childhood.
