AdvertisementWe're not in a recessionTo determine whether the economy is in recession, it helps to first define the term. Sure, the yearlong payrolls were adjusted down, but the story has largely been the same: This is a cooling but not collapsing labor market. Despite the 50-basis-point interest-rate cut by Chairman Jerome Powell and the rest of the Fed, there's evidence of additional slowing in the labor market. Since the rate cut, I've grown more confident that it will act in the face of weaker employment data. If the labor market deteriorates and the unemployment rate increases, we ought not to rule out another 50-basis-point move.

People along the coast now have 10 to 30 minutes to reach high ground before a giant wave engulfs the Pacific Northwest. The scene above is a worst-case scenario of a megaquake striking the Pacific Northwest. "It's ominously quiet," Harold Tobin, Washington's state seismologist and the director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, told BI. The Pacific Northwest, by contrast, only found out about the danger posed by the Cascadia subduction zone in the 1980s. The Cascadia subduction zone pushed those mountains up about 10 million years ago, carving the mountain range that makes the Pacific Northwest so stunning.

According to Clearview Energy Partners, Russian crude prices over the last four weeks have averaged about six cents below the Brent crude price. Record volumes of sanctioned Russian oil were carried by the "dark fleet" and known sanctioned tankers without known insurance over September, according to a recent report from Lloyd's List. The Price Cap Coalition continues to engage with industry to ensure compliance with the price cap and to increase Putin's costs of going outside it." The increased use of dark fleet vessels comes with greater maritime safety and environmental risks. Insurance giant Allianz said in May that dark fleet tankers had been linked to more than 50 accidents.

Not long ago, Tunisia was hailed as the Arab Spring’s only success story. He advanced to a runoff promising to usher in a “New Tunisia” and hand more power to young people and local governments. While hostilities throughout the Middle East have ramped up, there has not been any oil supply disruption, observed Andy Lipow, president at Lipow Oil Associates. "The oil market does not expect an all-out war between Iran and Israel that would impact supply," he told CNBC via email. However, both experts noted that a rapid escalation in conflict could lead to crude oil prices hitting $100 per barrel. While unlikely, oil prices would jump by $30 per barrel if it occurred, he added. "If events rapidly spiral, any material disruption to Iranian oil supplies or oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz could send oil prices well over $100 per barrel," said Young.

Immigrants expected to boost the economyThere are several reasons why immigrants largely benefit the economy and job market, economists said. Immigrants take jobs but they also create new ones by spending in local economies and by starting businesses, economists said. One 2020 research paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research found immigrants are 80% more likely to become entrepreneurs than native workers. To the extent there's job competition from new immigrants, it tends to fall mostly on prior immigrants rather than native U.S. workers, according to the National Academies paper. "Sudden surges of immigration obviously affect the ability of native workers to find and take jobs on a given afternoon," Clemens said.

Though many say they are thankful to have Social Security payments at all, they aren't enough to fill the gap. To help pay the bills, nearly 80% of retirees receive some Social Security income, per BI's calculations, and the Social Security Administration estimates that 97% of older adults will ultimately receive benefits. She told BI that her expected $2,000 monthly Social Security payments may not be enough. As pensions dissipate and only higher-earning retirees have savings, Social Security might only become more pivotal for retirees. A new court filing accuses Skillz Inc. — a struggling mobile gaming company — of trying to sabotage its rivals by creating a fake consumer advocacy website. The allegations were made in a counterclaim filed to court Monday by one of those competitors, Papaya Games. A screenshot of the 4 Fair Play website, included in a Papaya Games court filing, shows that Skillz's competitors were identified as the worst offenders — not Skillz itself. A Skillz executive provided comments on the 4 Fair Play website design, according to screenshots of a website mockup included as a court exhibit. But it said in Monday's counterclaim that Skillz games, however, do use bots.

Early on Sept. 30, 1893, the Margaret A. Muir schooner, carrying cargo of bulk salt, cleared the narrow Straits of Mackinac on its way down Lake Michigan toward Chicago’s port. As the crew rounded Michigan and steered south, the ship encountered relentless 50-mile-an-hour winds. Captain David Clow and his crew of six barely made it out alive, steering a lifeboat through high waves to the Wisconsin shore. In his grief, Captain Clow, who was 71 years old and had survived at least three earlier shipwrecks, swore off sailing. The Muir joined thousands of other ships claimed by the stormy waters of the Great Lakes in the 19th century.
