Containers at a shipping terminal in Yokohama, Japan on Oct. 18, 2021. Japan's trade deficit surged in September as imports overwhelmed export growth. Asia-Pacific markets are set to open mixed on Wednesday, following losses on Wall Street that saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumble for a ninth straight day. Investors in Asia will assess trade data out of Japan, which will be released later in the day, ahead of a Bank of Japan rate decision this week. The country's exports are expected to have increased 2.8% in November year-over-year according to economists polled by Reuters.

The Fed is widely expected to deliver a 25-basis-point interest rate cut at the end of its two-day policy meeting on Wednesday, with markets pricing in a 97% probability, according to the CME's FedWatch tool. Japan's exports rose for a second straight month in November, data showed on Wednesday. Investors further reined in bets on cuts next year after data on Tuesday showed British wage growth picked up more than expected. Elsewhere, the offshore yuan traded at 7.2885 per dollar, not far from a 13-month low touched against the dollar on Tuesday amid dour expectations for Chinese economic growth. The Australian dollar , which tends to act as a liquid proxy for the yuan, dipped 0.17% to $0.6326 against the greenback, its lowest since November 2023.

The stock prices of America’s largest health insurance providers — including Aetna owner CVS Health, Cigna and Humana — have also tumbled recently. As of Tuesday’s closing bell, the Dow had fallen 1,564 points since Dec. 4, with UnitedHealth Group accounting for 804 of those points. UnitedHealth Group is also the worst performer in the 30-stock index this month, with losses more than double those of the second-worst performer, Goldman Sachs. Once again, CVS, UnitedHealth Group, Cigna and Humana all rank as the worst performers, with double-digit losses of 18% to 25%. Those businesses have drawn widespread criticism in part because many of the biggest insurance providers, including UnitedHealth Group, Cigna and CVS, also own some of the largest such companies.

In an attempt to reclaim the names of popular IKEA products, the Swedish tourist board launched a campaign, Discover the Originals, matching them to their namesakes back in 2022. Over the course of two weeks, Lynch, accompanied by his puppy Umlaut, visited all 21 counties in Sweden, stopping off at places with IKEA products named after them. After moving to Sweden in 2021 and finding himself in a home filled with IKEA furniture, Lynch was intrigued. “They were really, really small. For context: The Dow was trading at 24,461.70 back in 2018 — close to half its value as of Monday's close. All the while, Nvidia has been conspicuously absent from tech's upward move within the Dow, losing 9% since Dec. 5. The American dream — like a beloved pair of pants you left in the dryer too long — is shrinking. Their millennial counterparts felt similarly, though they were slightly more bullish on the possibility of the American dream. And even among those who might have achieved the American dream — higher earners with college degrees — life satisfaction has slipped. At the same time, there's a bittersweet parallel running alongside the shrinking of the American dream. But now that the American dream is within reach for these people, it's already shrinking.

Brendan McDermid | ReutersThe Dow Jones Industrial Average has been declining for nine straight days, heading for its longest losing streak since February 1978. The biggest laggard in the 30-stock Dow during this losing streak has been UnitedHealth , which has contributed to more than half of the decline in the price-weighted average over the past eight sessions. And then there's a rotation going on with investors selling out of the cyclical names in the Dow that initially popped on Trump's reelection. The Dow, largely comprised of blue-chip consumer discretionary and industrial names, is widely viewed as a proxy for overall economic conditions. The Dow was first created in the 1890s to model a regular investor's portfolio — a simple average of the prices of all constituents.

Now, freeze-dried mouse sperm, stored aboard the International Space Station (ISS) in a radiation protection box, could help give us a better understanding of mammals’ ability to procreate off Earth. In 1997, he and another academic developed a novel method that they used to clone the world’s first mouse from adult cells. And he and his team pioneered a freeze-drying method used to send mouse sperm to the ISS, where it was stored in a freezer for up to six years. From that study, they determined that freeze-dried sperm could stay viable for 200 years in space. When it comes to mice, the freeze-dried mouse sperm Wakayama is currently storing aboard the ISS will return to Earth in 2025 for study.

Protesters calling for the ouster of South Korea President Yoon Suk Yeol react after the result of the second martial law impeachment vote outside the National Assembly in Seoul on December 14, 2024. South Korean lawmakers on December 14 voted to remove President Yoon Suk Yeol from office for his failed attempt to impose martial law last week. South Korean markets made early gains on Monday after the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol on Saturday. Yoon had declared martial law late on Dec. 3, the first time in over 40 years that Asia's fourth-largest economy has seen martial law declared. Both indexes had rebounded strongly last week after initially falling following the martial law flip-flop and failed first impeachment vote.
