Stouffer's takes on Kraft with new boxed mac and cheese

Stouffer's is exiting the freezer aisle and taking on Kraft Heinz with its new shelf-stable mac and cheese. The average American consumer eats mac and cheese 22 times a year, trailing only pizza in its frequency, according to Moe. Out of those 22 occasions, the mac and cheese comes from a box about 70% of the time. To start, under the name Stouffer's Supreme, the brand will offer two variations on boxed mac and cheese: a classic cheddar and a three-cheese version made with cheddar, gouda and parmesan. Moe said the cheddar is a "sibling, not identical twin" of its frozen mac and cheese, while the three-cheese option is a "cousin."

Nestle is launching a new frozen-food brand, Vital Pursuit, aimed at the growing market of consumers who are using GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. In October, Walmart's U.S. CEO John Furner told Bloomberg that people who pick up GLP-1 drugs from its pharmacies are buying less food, typically with fewer calories. But Nestle sees an opportunity to cater to those consumers through Vital Pursuit. Vital Pursuit's packaging won't include mentions of GLP-1 medications, but Nestle said the company will more directly connect the brand to the drugs on social media. The food company expects that its global growth will slow this year as inflation-weary consumers buy less of its products.

But, there are small signs the pressure is easing, with U.S. consumer prices a month earlier declining for the first time in two-and-a-half years, due in part to gas prices. Price hikes - or halts - are set to take center stage at the Consumer Analyst Group of New York annual conference on Feb. 20 in Boca Raton, Florida. DIFFERENT PREDICTIONSAfter more than a year of consistent price hikes, some consumer goods makers such as Kraft Mac & Cheese manufacturer Kraft Heinz Co (KHC.O) are pressing pause as they weigh consumer demand for their items. Frozen pizza prices have risen about 14% in the last year, according to IRI data. "Retailers cannot truly push back on prices … if the company has an important brand," Bernstein analyst Bruno Monteyne said.
