U.S. crude oil prices fell for the third straight session on Tuesday, as Gulf Coast oil infrastructure appears to have avoided any substantial damage from Tropical Storm Beryl. On Monday, Beryl made landfall in Matagorda, Texas, as a Category 1 hurricane but later weakened into a tropical storm. Beryl has moved inland as a tropical depression and is now north of Shreveport, Louisiana, according to the National Hurricane Center. U.S. oil inventories fell by 12.2 million barrels for the week ended June 28, and gasoline stocks declined by 2.2 million barrels in a potential bullish sign for the market. Macquarie, however, is forecasting that oil inventories dropped by 1.2 million barrels last week, with the total balance "only modestly tighter than we had anticipated," according to a Monday note.

A day after Tropical Storm Beryl struck Houston with deadly force, flooding roads and highways and killing at least seven people in Texas and an eighth in Louisiana, officials were struggling to restore power for millions of residents as hot weather returned to the region. But the force of its winds still left Houston residents reeling for the second time in two months after a deadly system of thunderstorms crashed through the city in May. The storm had sustained winds of 65 m.p.h. as it passed through Houston but also produced damaging, hurricane-force wind gusts above 80 m.p.h. Two of the confirmed deaths from the storm in the Houston area on Monday involved trees that fell into homes, crushing people inside.

Galveston Mayor Craig Brown speaks at a press conference on July 7. KPRCGalveston Mayor Craig Brown says the city is prepared for Tropical Storm Beryl as it makes its way to the Texas coastline. They could see six to seven feet of storm surge if the storm moves a little more north. “That would cause a lot of flooding on the west end and in downtown Galveston,” Brown said. Businesses use sand bags to protect windows and entrances from Beryl in Galveston, Texas, on July 7.

CNN —Restoring power to millions of Texans slammed by the deadly and destructive storm Beryl could take days or even weeks, posing a dangerous scenario for residents who will not have air conditioning as sweltering heat settles over the state. Beryl slammed into southern Texas as a Category 1 hurricane Monday, knocking out power to more than 2.5 million homes and leaving at least 8 people dead in Texas and Louisiana. As it hurtles northeastward, it is bringing flooding and the threat of tornadoes across eastern Texas, western Louisiana and Arkansas. “The lack of proper cooling combined with many people outdoors cleaning up after Beryl could produce dangerous heat conditions,” the National Weather Service in Houston said. Despite weakening, Beryl will still produce flooding and tornadoes in the US as it moves inland through mid-week.

Oil little changed as investors eye impact of storm Beryl on Texas

Oil prices were little changed as investors eyed energy supply disruption, with the largest ports in Texas shut before Tropical Storm Beryl likely strengthens into a hurricane and makes landfall on Monday. Brent crude futures inched up 11 cents, or 0.1%, to $86.65 a barrel as at 0042 GMT after closing down 89 cents on Friday. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was at $83.08 a barrel, down 8 cents, after settling down 72 cents in the previous session. Lower interest rates can boost economic activity and increase crude oil demand. Investors were also watching for any impact from elections in the UK, France and Iran last week on geopolitics and energy policies.

Tropical Storm Beryl ripped a path of destruction through the heart of Houston on Monday, transforming roads into rivers, killing at least four people and knocking out power for more than two million customers across Texas. The storm, which made landfall early Monday as a Category 1 hurricane, weakened as it passed over the city and continued its swirling march north. But its relatively modest official strength undersold its power, local authorities said. As it churned through Houston, officials warned people to stay inside and away from windows, “as though there was a tornado coming your way,” Lina Hidalgo, the top official in Harris County, which includes Houston, cautioned residents. The center passed just to the west of the city, meaning Houston received some of the worst of the storm as it spun counterclockwise.
