Russia moved extra tanks, artillery and rocket systems to its southern Kursk region and imposed anti-terrorism measures in border areas as it battled a shock incursion by Ukraine’s military. Ukrainian forces, meanwhile, posted a video purporting to show them in control of a town near the border, the first pictorial evidence of their cross-border advances. CNN —The US announced on Friday a new $400 million military aid package to Ukraine. The announcement marks the second Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) package since President Joe Biden signed a long-delayed national security supplemental securing $60 billion in funding for Ukraine. The $6 billion package — the largest the US has announced — is under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). US Marines observed targets during a counter-unmanned aircraft system (UAS) range on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The officials, who were not authorized to speak publicly, did not say when the missiles would be delivered or when a public announcement would be made. Defense officials have said the U.S. does not have a large stockpile of excess ATACMS, which have a bigger payload than traditional artillery, to provide to Ukraine. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the Biden administration has shifted its stance on which weapons it is ready to provide to Ukraine's military. At the same, Ukraine has intensified a campaign of missile and drone strikes targeting sites deep behind Russian lines.

REUTERS/Valentyn Ogirenko/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Sept 20 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden plans to announce a $325 million military aid package for Ukraine on Thursday to coincide with a visit to Washington by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, a U.S. official said on Wednesday on condition of anonymity. The weapons aid package was expected to include the second tranche of cluster munitions fired by a 155 millimeter Howitzer cannon, the U.S official said. Ukraine got an initial tranche of M864 155 millimeter artillery rounds in July 2023. Sending 155 millimeter artillery rounds with cluster munitions has eased the drain on standard "unitary" 155 millimeter shells, which the U.S. also plans to include in this shipment. Since the Russian invasion in February 2022 the U.S. has sent more than $40 billion worth of security assistance to Ukraine.
