Before he worked with photographs, Kosinski was interested in Facebook. It's just picking up on the way gay people present themselves on dating sites — which, not surprisingly, is often very different from the way straight people present themselves to potential partners. Kosinski thinks AI's ability to make the kind of personality judgments he studies will only get better. That is the future Kosinski fears — even as he continues to tinker with the very models that prove it will come to pass.

Two teenagers drowned while swimming off Coney Island in Brooklyn as a thunderstorm rolled into the area Friday evening, the second such fatal episode at a New York City beach in less than a month. Two girls, ages 17 and 18, were reported missing after going into the water near Stillwell Avenue shortly after 8 p.m., according to the New York City Police Department. Both were later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to the police. The deaths, two weeks after two teenagers died swimming off the Rockaways in Queens, mark a particularly deadly start to the summer season at New York City beaches, where drownings have been a perennial problem. With more than two months remaining, the city matched last year’s total of four lives lost.

CNN —The prosecution began opening statements Monday morning in the racketeering trial of Grammy-winning rapper Young Thug, who is accused of leading a violent street gang in the Atlanta area affiliated with the national Bloods gang. Young Thug, whose real name is Jeffery Williams, was charged alongside more than two dozen other people under the state’s expansive Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act – known as RICO. Young Thug is among six defendants who have pleaded not guilty to all charges and are standing trial in an Atlanta courtroom, the judge said Monday. Prosecutors say Young Thug is the cofounder of a criminal street gang – Young Slime Life – that’s responsible for violent acts dating back a decade. The trial is expected to last months and could feature a star-studded list of witnesses, including rappers Lil Wayne and Killer Mike.

☆ 4 Parking Garages Ordered Evacuated After Deadly Collapse in Manhattan

In the wake of a deadly collapse of a parking garage in Lower Manhattan last week, New York City officials found structural problems at four other garages so dangerous they ordered the buildings at least partially vacated. At those four garages — two in Manhattan and two in Brooklyn — the city’s Buildings Department found that the structures had “deteriorated to the point where they were now posing an immediate threat to public safety,” said Andrew Rudansky, a spokesman for the department. The discoveries, he said, came during inspections of garages conducted after the April 18 collapse of a garage on Ann Street in the Financial District in Manhattan that left its manager dead in the rubble and five others injured. Engineers found that a two-story garage at 2781 Stillwell Avenue in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn was in “severe disrepair,” Mr. Rudansky said. The department issued a “full vacate order” for the entire building and ordered its owners to close for business and immediately retain a professional engineer to compile a structural report, he said.

The Financial Accounting Standards Board on Wednesday said it wants companies to provide more information on their income taxes, the group’s latest attempt to give the public more detail on the companies they invest in. At least once a year, public companies have to disclose the amount of cash taxes they pay. Companies must also disclose their effective tax rate, or the ratio between their tax expense and their pretax income. The first proposal came in 2016 and would have required companies to distinguish their U.S. from their foreign income taxes, among other changes. This time, it sought a breakout of the amount of federal, state and foreign taxes public companies paid, as well as disclosure on a quarterly basis.
