The class-action lawsuit represents around five million Amazon account holders residing in the Netherlands, SDBN said. Photo: PASCAL ROSSIGNOL/REUTERSA consumer-rights group in the Netherlands sued Amazon on Wednesday over its alleged practice of tracking website visitors’ online activity, using recently expanded legal provisions allowing class actions. The lawsuit, filed in a Dutch court by Stichting Data Bescherming Nederland, or SDBN, said Amazon is violating the European Union’s privacy law by monitoring visitors to popular websites through cookies—the pieces of code that identify individual browsers to create targeted advertisements—without their permission.

The Stichting Data Bescherming Nederland (SDBN) said it intends to seek damages for people whose data was allegedly wrongfully tracked and traded in the 2013-2021 period. It filed a subpoena at Rotterdam District Court summoning X to appear on Jan. 3. For the case to proceed, judges have to determine whether X has a case to answer, whether there is an identifiable group of people affected, and if so whether SDBN represents them.

A court has ruled that a man who has fathered up to 600 children must stop donating sperm. Already banned from donating his sperm in The Netherlands, Meijer must now also contact clinics abroad to have them destroy his samples. Meijer had helped father between 550 and 600 children in the 16 years he had spent donating sperm, judges said, The Guardian reported. Dutch clinical guidelines say a sperm donor should not father more than 25 children from 12 families. The Dutch News, which described Meijer as an "obsessive" sperm donor, said the Dutch gynecologists' society, NVOG, first issued a warning about Meijer in 2017.

"Personal information was given to third parties without Facebook users being informed and without there being a legal basis to do so." The decision was directed at Facebook Ireland because it is the part of the company that oversees the processing of Dutch user data. A spokesperson for the plaintiff, Data Privacy Stichting, said the group now hopes to sit down with Facebook to negotiate a settlement. "We think this is a very strong signal not only to Facebook but to all companies that are unrightfully using their users' data." The Data Privacy group was launched in 2020 as a partnership between a group of law firms and the Dutch Consumers' Association to try to seek damages.
