But thanks to the efforts of the research teams awarded the IG Nobel Prize on Thursday, some of these questions – which you might not even have thought existed – now have answers. Professor Sander Woutersen, right, displays an oversized stuffed worm while accepting a shared Ig Nobel Prize in chemistry for research using chromatography to separate drunk and sober worms. A Dutch-French research team also produced a live demonstration when they collected the chemistry prize to explain how they used chromotagraphy to separate drunk and sober worms. On that note, some of the items in the box were missing, presenters said, and the box itself was “almost impossible to open.”

CNN —Is Karen Read a rage-filled cop killer, or the convenient patsy of a vast police cover-up? That’s the question put to a Massachusetts jury on Tuesday in closing arguments of her murder trial in a case that has riveted the Bay State. May told Insider that being open about the challenges you're facing can make you a better leader. Leaders need to "take the wall down" so those under them can say what they need to perform best. Insider recently asked May about her work in HR and meeting the needs of the company's large employee base. But you also need to work for companies with leaders that really understand the challenges. But I think employers need to keep top of mind the needs of their people.

The climate crisis is causing a "new abnormal" characterized by more frequent and intense disasters. More people are connecting their personal run-ins with disasters to the climate crisis. "We're not on a plateau," Leiserowitz, who studies people's attitudes toward the climate crisis, said. Still, the climate crisis remains psychologically distant for many people. These institutions haven't acted fast enough to avert the crisis, climate scientists say.

Why Spending Less May Be Good News for Card Companies

Stocks of card companies are continuing to sharply outperform banks in 2023. Photo: Steven Senne/Associated PressUsually investors in credit-card companies like to see people spending more and more. But in the game of expectations among consumers, lenders and the Federal Reserve, the opposite might be true right now. A number of card lenders in their recent earnings reports have cited some signs of slowing growth in consumer spending. Capital One Financial on Thursday said that spend per active account “is pretty flat to a year ago.” American Express and Citigroup both noted that while growth in U.S. consumer travel and entertainment spending remained strong through the first quarter, other categories were slowing later in the period.

The FDIC put up for auction about $700 million of high-quality mortgage-backed bonds Tuesday in what could prove to be a test of how much the U.S. government recovers on the $114 billion in face value of the bonds it assumed.
Advances in depression treatment have been rare over the past few decades. But treatments for mental-health illnesses, like depression, haven't changed much over the past few decades. Insider put together a roundup of the most promising depression treatments today, both those that have won approval and those that are in the later stages of the research process. Unlike most depression treatments on the market, Auvelity is rapid-acting, which means it offers faster relief for patients. MDD is also known as clinical depression and is defined by persistent depressive symptoms.
Labor shortagesAs the pandemic swooped in, air travel was among the industries most affected, as more than 90% of flights were grounded. Today, labor shortages exist throughout the economy, but the problem drags on in the air travel sector, where more extensive employee training is usually required. Steven Senne / APOutdated technology and infrastructureThere is near-universal agreement that the infrastructure underpinning segments of America's air travel system is outdated and vulnerable. Rep. Sam Graves, R-Montana, said the incident highlighted "a huge vulnerability in our air transportation system." Air travel should be predictable and consistent, and you shouldn’t have to wonder if air traffic control is going to be working today as you head to the airport.
