CNN —Almost half of all deaths from tropical cyclones come from storm surge.
“A storm surge is a rise in water level caused by a strong storm’s wind pushing water onshore,” said CNN meteorologist Brandon Miller.
During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the storm surge reached as high as 25 to 28 feet above normal tide levels.
Due to the climate crisis, storm surge has become an even greater threat in recent years.
