At 10, he joined El Sistema, a globally acclaimed program providing free classical music training to children from under-resourced communities. After moving to Gothenburg the following year, he created a music group for refugees and started with 13 students. He knew playing music together would help them make friends, express themselves, and rebuild their self-esteem. “They can be one of the most cost-effective ways to keep girls in school.”Ultimately, McGriff founded Style Her Empowered, known as SHE.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, more and more hotels are happy to show off their spookier side as a result. “They ditched the [premise of], ‘Oh, people may be scared,’ and said, ‘Wow, people will come and I can market it, so we’re a haunted hotel,’” said Melchiorri. The inspiration for Stephen King’s novel-turned-film “The Shining,” the 420-room grande dame, whose imposing facade is nearly as dramatic as its Rocky Mountains backdrop, is arguably the world’s most famous haunted hotel. From a messaging and marketing perspective, hotels should share their ghost stories or spooky lore “in a way that they don’t surprise anyone,” Orr said. “My experience is, whether they will admit it or not, most hotels have something that goes bump in the night,” Hunnings said.

CNN —Steve Bannon was released from federal prison Tuesday, according to a source with knowledge, emerging just a week before Election Day to retake the helm of his weakened right-wing media platform. “War Room,” which frequently appeared in Apple’s Top Podcasts before Bannon reported to prison, fell off the charts by early July, according to data from Podchaser. Peltz still predicted Bannon would be a prominent voice for election denialism if it appears Trump is coming up short after Election Day. On the “War Room” podcast, a cast of fill-in hosts cheered Bannon’s return. In May, Bannon claimed on his podcast that “they’re going to do everything to steal this election,” as he reiterated the baseless claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

The Federal Reserve cut interest rates in its September meeting. With inflation starting to level off and the Fed cutting interest rates in its September 18 meeting, many experts believe rates have only just started dropping. After all, lower rates help consumers save when they borrow money, but they also translate to lower rates on savings accounts and money market accounts. For example, borrowing money at lower rates can make it easier to purchase a home, finance a car, or start a business. Lower interest rates can also help potential homebuyers buy a pricier home, since less of the mortgage payment they qualify for goes toward interest each month.

This is one of them: Drinking several cups of caffeinated coffee or tea a day may protect against Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke. They also looked at responses from about 172,000 people who specified that they drank caffeinated coffee or tea. None of them had a history of cardiometabolic disease — defined by a diagnosis of at least two of the three conditions: Type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease or stroke — when the study began. And among those who did eventually develop cardiometabolic disease, drinking moderate amounts of coffee every day was still associated with lower risk of developing another cardiometabolic disease. Studies have also shown a link between high caffeine intake and a greater risk of dementia and stroke.

Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Stephen Knox Jones Jr., a 37-year-old scientist who lives in Vilnius, Lithuania. Here, people recognize the value of having time away from work for well-being — and now I don't feel guilty anymore when I take time off. Jones Jr. thinks the quality of his research is better because he's less stressed and has more head space to dedicate to his work. That's why I think the quality of my research is better in Lithuania than it might be in the US. Jones Jr.'s quality of research is important to him because of his strong desire to contribute to humanity's advancement.

The people who would make Trump president want different things from him, and those differences present political perils for Trump and also make it difficult to predict the contours of his second term. And when Trump’s emotions ultimately dictate policy, it’s fair for Americans to be concerned about worst-case outcomes. Even worse, they feel personally persecuted by a “uniparty” or “regime” that supposedly despises them and rejects their values. He’d reported to prison the day before to serve a four-month sentence for contempt of Congress. Sadly, that victim identity was only reinforced in the mid-2010s, when Duvall appeared on an episode of “Dr. Phil” episode with a ratings-bait title, the then 67-year-old actress made confusing claims and was apparently struggling with her mental health. Shelley Duvall, Herve Villechaize, on set, in May 1982, "Rumplestiltskin," for "Faerie Tale Theatre." It was buoyed, however, by Duvall, whose unique charm and childlike whimsy as host and presenter of each tale was the perfect fairy dust. A reminder to perhaps not focus so much on her elusiveness, but on the legacy of Duvall’s work – which was there all along.

If Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” was a twist on the centuries-old Gothic horror genre, there was no one better suited to play a modern Gothic heroine than Shelley Duvall. Duvall, who died Thursday at 75, was in her late 20s when she shot the role of Wendy Torrance, put-upon wife of blocked writer Jack (Jack Nicholson). The pair have holed up with their young son in the Overlook Hotel, working as winter caretakers. Wendy is virtually trapped there, a small woman often alone in a rambling, dangerous building full of secrets. The Gothic heroine, the woman trapped in the menacing haunted home, must exhibit courage in the face of danger, remaining resolute while also being susceptible to the evil that lurks around every corner.

Joe Biden is still standing, refusing to bow out — he reiterated that once again in a lengthy and mostly successful news conference on Thursday night. Some may view it as selfish and irresponsible. Some may even see it as dangerous. But I see it as remarkable. Despite sending a clear message — in his recent flurry of interviews and rallies, in his stalwart address this week to members of the NATO alliance and in his letter on Monday to congressional Democrats, in which he assured them that “I wouldn’t be running again if I did not absolutely believe I was the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024” — there’s still a slow drumbeat from luminaries, donors and elected officials trying to write Biden’s political obituary.
