DETROIT – The traditional Detroit automakers – General Motors , Ford Motor and Stellantis – should exit the Chinese market "as soon as they possibly can," Bank of America's top automotive analyst said Tuesday. Murphy, who has previously asked General Motors about exiting the market, said the "D3" automakers need to focus on their core products and more profitable regions. It's a prospect that would have been unthinkable for the automakers, specifically GM, just a few years ago, but the rise of local Chinese automakers such as BYD and Geely has put growing pressure on the companies. While the Detroit automakers need to rethink the way their doing business in China, Murphy said it's slightly different for U.S. electric vehicle leader Tesla . Murphy said Tesla, like Chinese companies, has a roughly $17,000 cost advantage in EV components compared to the traditional Detroit automakers to assist it in the Chinese market, allowing it to have "more room to run."

Southern California boasts the highest concentration of chrome plating shops in America and regulators in that state have been requiring those methods for years. But California is now moving toward an outright ban on chrome plating using hexavalent chromium while offering funding for chrome platers to transition to other methods. In 2019, green slime oozing out onto a highway near Detroit was found to be hexavalent chromium leaking from a nearby business. “We are also using light as the new chrome,” VW said in a statement shared with CNN. “Chrome peaked in the ’50s with the big American land yachts and stuff with giant chrome bumpers and giant chrome grills.

Joe Biden bet on the American worker while Donald Trump blamed the American worker. Of course, there were plenty of signs the UAW chief was planning to make the union’s backing of Biden official. That's what this choice is about.”More labor union endorsements are likely to roll out in the coming months.

Trump has slammed the president for the visit, claiming Biden “had no intention” of walking the picket line until Trump said he would make a speech in Michigan. In the absence of an announced plan from the White House, speculation spread through the UAW ranks that Biden would go to whatever picket line was closest to the airport. Amid mounting political pressure to ramp up his public support, Biden is expressing solidarity with the union members, who are striking against the Big Three automakers – General Motors, Ford and Stellantis – for a second week. Union members, once a reliable Democratic voting bloc, have gradually gravitated to Republican candidates, according to CNN polls and the AFL-CIO, the nation’s largest labor federation. The historic presidential picket line appearance will reaffirm his commitment to the critical voting and organizing group ahead of the 2024 election.

Ford, GM, and Stellantis have expressed displeasure with the strategy. After Furman's messages leaked Thursday night, the Detroit car companies expressed their displeasure with the union's strategy. Ford and Stellantis called the messages "disappointing" and "disturbing," while GM said the message "calls into question who is actually in charge of UAW strategy." The idea was met with skepticism by many, who said that an all-out strike would quickly drain the UAW's strike resources. That leaves plenty in the union's $825 million strike fund as the work stoppage expands Friday.

New York CNN —Looming over the United Auto Workers strike: Automakers’ continued migration to the anti-union South. Jobs at nonunion EV battery facilities pay less than the roughly $32 an hour that veteran UAW workers make. Since 1990, the South’s share of auto jobs has doubled from around 15% to 30% today, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Mostly nonunion EV jobs and manufacturing investments are surging in Southern states led by Republicans. The South has picked up 66% of planned EV jobs, while projects in Midwestern states such as Michigan, Indiana, Kansas and Ohio have combined for 26% of planned jobs, according to S&P Global.

"Let's be clear: No one wants a strike," Biden said, hours after UAW launched a targeted strike against all three Detroit automakers. Record profits, Biden said, should result in "record contracts" for workers. UAW is calling the campaign the "Stand Up Strike," an homage to the 1936-37 historic "Sit Down Strike" against General Motors in Flint, Michigan, that inaugurated the domestic auto workers labor union movement. The Big Three have offered the union about half of the pay increase UAW is seeking. "The auto workers are being sold down the river by their leadership, and their leadership should endorse Trump," the GOP's 2024 front-runner said in an interview set to run Sunday on "Meet the Press."

Consumer sentiment dipped slightly in September, indicating Americans are tentative about the direction of the economy, according to the latest survey-based index from the University of Michigan. The overall consumer sentiment index, released on Friday, retreated to 67.7 from 69.5 in August, while the current conditions assessment dropped to 69.8 from 75.7 and the forward-looking expectations index increased to 66.3 from 65.5. “Sentiment this month was characterized by divergent movements across index components and across demographic groups with little net change from last month. There was improvement in how consumers see inflation going forward. That means workers are keeping just ahead of inflation, although prices for necessities such as groceries and gasoline have increased.

In contrast, when UPS was faced with a possible August 1 strike, the company and the Teamsters union both repeatedly said they were close to a deal. Those two sides eventually averted a strike with a deal overwhelmingly approved by the membership. No predictions a deal is closeThe current contracts between the United Auto Workers union and the three automakers all expire at 11:59 pm on September 14, raising the possibility of one or more strike on September 15. The move had relatively limited legal significance since the National Labor Relations Board won’t rule on it before the September 15 strike deadline. A summer of strikesDespite the deal that averted a strike at UPS, this has been a summer of strikes.

CNN —Seven major automakers are coming together to create a joint venture that will build out a large electric vehicle fast-charging network in the North America, in an attempt to make electric vehicles more attractive to consumers. The first of the new charging stations will open next summer, the companies announced, first in the US and, later, in Canada. Vehicles made by other manufacturers, not just these seven, will be able to charge at these stations, as well. The new joint venture will rely on funds from the automakers as well as using grants offered by the federal government to build new EV chargers. There are currently about 35,000 NACS and CCS chargers in the US, but many more will be needed as the number of electric vehicles increases in coming years.

United Auto Workers members on strike picket outside General Motors' Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant on Sept. 25, 2019 with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders (far left) in Detroit. DETROIT – The United Auto Workers union appears ready to take a hard line when it comes to national negotiations this year with the Detroit automakers, warning of strikes or work stoppages, if needed. UAW President Shawn Fain said the "union will not accept any concessions" from General Motors , Ford Motor and Stellantis – a lofty mission in such negotiations. Contract talks between the union and automakers usually begin in earnest in July ahead of mid-September expirations of the previous four-year agreements. Union leaders, led by Fain, are largely newly elected officers that ran on platforms of standing up to companies and reforming the organization following a years-long federal corruption scandal that partially involved prior negotiations.
