CNN —Twenty-two-time grand slam singles champion Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from next week’s Laver Cup due to fitness concerns, the tournament announced on Thursday. “I’m really disappointed to share that I won’t be able to compete at the Laver Cup in Berlin next week,” Nadal said in a statement. The Laver Cup has not announced who will replace Nadal to join Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas in Bjorn Borg’s Team Europe. A plan to build a casino over a sprawling rail yard on Manhattan’s Far West Side has a new, formidable opponent: parkgoers. Friends of the High Line, an influential nonprofit that operates the nearby 1.5-mile rail-line-turned-park, said Wednesday that it will muster supporters to attempt to thwart the development plan. The opponents of the casino proposal said the development would block views of the city from the High Line and create gusty winds and cast long shadows that could hurt local businesses. The proposal, submitted in February, would also create a 1,180-foot apartment tower, a 1,376-foot office building, a public school and day care. The development, in Hudson Yards, is being led by Related Companies, which built the eastern half of the site, and Wynn Resorts, a Las Vegas gambling giant.

Former President Donald Trump claimed that the United States has given more in aid to Ukraine than European countries put together. “The European nations together have spent $100 billion, or maybe more than that, less than us,” Trump said. From just before Russia’s invasion in early 2022 through April 2024, European countries contributed more aid to Ukraine than the US, according to data from the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany. Additionally, Europe had committed more total military aid to Ukraine, at about $76 billion to about $69 billion for the US. And the Kiel Institute found that Ukraine itself was getting only about half of the money in a 2024 US bill that had widely been described as a $61 billion aid bill for Ukraine.

Kathy Hochul said she paused New York City’s congestion pricing program for economic reasons: The tolls could hurt the region’s recovery from the coronavirus pandemic more than they helped. But a new analysis of the transit budget gap left in the wake of the program’s suspension this month points to possibly deeper pain: the potential loss of thousands of high-paying jobs throughout the state over the next few years. At least 101,500 jobs could be lost in New York if the state does not find another way to fill the multibillion-dollar hole left in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s budget, according to a report released Wednesday by Reinvent Albany, a watchdog group. A majority of those jobs would have been created by private companies that work with the authority to build new trains and buses and install new propulsion systems, among other things. On average, workers in these fields earn over $100,000 a year, said Rachael Fauss, a senior policy adviser with Reinvent Albany.

With a month left before drivers start being charged to enter Midtown and downtown Manhattan under New York City’s congestion pricing plan, a new group of challengers is joining a crowded field of critics: truckers. “It’s simply the way that trucks are being targeted.” The suit was filed in federal court in Manhattan. The congestion pricing plan, scheduled to start June 30, will charge fees to most vehicles entering Manhattan on or below 60th Street. Passenger vehicles entering the zone will be charged up to $15 once a day, with some exceptions. Commercial trucks will be charged $24 or $36 per entry, depending on the size of the vehicle and the time of day.
