CNN —Mary DeBardelaben once made a promise to her grandmother’s portrait hanging on the sage green wall in her living room. Over the years, Mary DeBardelaben reached out to an organization that documented civil rights abuses in the Jim Crow era but without much success. It was stuffed with 69 pages of federal documents detailing Hattie DeBardelaben’s final moments. Mary DeBardelaben keeps a binder of everything she's learned about her grandmother, including this March 1945 newspaper story about her killing. As in the other photos, Hattie DeBardelaben stares at the camera without any hint of a smile.

CNN —Investigators in Wisconsin used genetic genealogy to solve a 50-year-old cold case this week, charging an 84-year-old Minnesota man with killing a woman who was found dead in 1974, authorities said. “This is a huge victory for our agency,” Bygd said at a Friday news conference. It’s the first time the agency has used genetic genealogy to solve a case, the sheriff said. Forensic genetic genealogy can generate leads for unsolved cases by analyzing DNA on top of traditional genealogy research, according to the US Department of Justice. So, I think he was done fighting it, personally,” said Sheriff Bygd.

It was a moment that encapsulated one of the biggest challenges facing her campaign – which, in the end, proved insurmountable. CNN spoke with over a dozen senior Harris campaign aides both in the Wilmington, Delaware, campaign headquarters and on the ground in the states, as well as multiple volunteers and local elected officials, over the course of the final weeks of the race. Vice President Kamala Harris makes her way to board Air Force Two before departing Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, Wisconsin on September 20. Biden could have taken on a role as steward and elder statesman, rather than a guy the Harris campaign never knew quite what do with. And those tensions manifested from almost the start of this short campaign, in the internal wrangling over who Harris should pick as her running mate.

The hearing itself will be conducted by a judge in a Carter County courthouse, about 100 miles from the crime scene, according to court officials, with the Letcher County courthouse having been closed for days because of the killing. The body found Wednesday near the Kentucky highway where a gunman opened fire Sept. 7 has been identified as the suspected shooter, Joseph A. Couch, officials said on Friday. Personal effects and a weapon were found with the body, officials said.
