Voters in California have narrowly rejected a ballot measure that would have gradually increased the minimum wage in the state to $18 per hour, NBC News projected Wednesday. It’s the first time a ballot measure proposing to raise the statewide minimum wage has failed nationwide since 1996. Some cities within New York also implement a minimum wage of $16 per hour, while Washington state’s minimum wage is $16.26 per hour. The defeat is the first time in 28 years that a ballot measure to increase a state minimum wage was defeated. Meanwhile, ballot measures in two other states to increase the minimum wage overwhelmingly passed this month.

More consequential, however, was the stagnant or shrinking turnout in these cities, which — coupled with turnout growth in Republican counties across the blue wall — drove Trump’s victory. New York City declared a drought warning on Monday, its first in 22 years, as the Northeast deals with severe dry conditions and brush fires during a historically dry autumn. The last drought warning in New York City was issued in 2002. Under a warning city agencies adopt drought protocols and voluntary water conservation is encouraged for New Yorkers. New York City's water supply needs almost 8 inches of rain to reach normal levels, officials said. Latino voters overall were more than a quarter of Arizona’s electorate — Gallego won them by 22 points while Harris carried them by 10 points. Luzerne County is one of many counties in Pennsylvania — and across the country — that shifted to the right this year. Kevin Kraynak, a Luzerne County native, traveled from his home in California to try to get out the vote. Luzerne County became a hotbed of election denialism in 2020, and Pennsylvania is an open-carry state. Just over 152,000 total ballots were cast in Luzerne County — about the same as in 2020. The recall last week of two Bay Area officials who both championed progressive crime policies reflects long-held frustrations around a previous increase in violence targeting the Asian American community, experts say. The vote is indicative of Asian Americans’ rightward shift toward tougher crime policies like much of the state, analysts say. From March 2020 to December 2021, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country reported nearly 11,000 hate incidents, including verbal and physical abuse, being coughed at or spat on, and facing discrimination in the workplace. “And a lot of people say, ‘Oh, we’ve moved on from that era.’ I don’t think Asian Americans have,” said James Zarsadiaz, author of “Resisting Change in Suburbia,” whose research focuses on Asian American conservatism. In San Francisco, for example, officials received 60 reports of hate crimes against Asian Americans in 2021, compared with the nine in 2020.

Arab and Muslim voters moved away from the Democratic Party this year in ways that led some community leaders to warn of a lasting shift from a voting bloc that has been reliably Democratic for two decades since it abandoned the GOP. Muslim voters backed Republican George W. Bush in 2000, but fled the GOP in response to the Bush administration’s post-9/11 military interventions abroad and anti-terror policies at home, which they felt unfairly targeted people of Islamic faith. President-elect Donald Trump has won Arizona, NBC News projects, putting its 11 electoral votes in his column after he narrowly lost the state to President Joe Biden in 2020. A fast-growing Latino population and a revolt against Trump among some old-line Republicans put the once-red state into battleground territory. And Biden’s 2020 win in Arizona was just the second time in 28 years that Arizona’s electoral votes went to the Democratic presidential nominee. At least 1,017 out LGBTQ candidates ran for election this year, a 1.1% increase compared with 2020, according to the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, a political organization that tracks and supports LGBTQ candidates for elected office. The LGBTQ+ Victory Fund endorsed and tracked 477 of the LGBTQ candidates who made it to the general election. As of Friday afternoon, about three-quarters of those races had been called, with LGBTQ candidates having a success rate of approximately 80%.
