BERLIN, Vt. — This fall, hundreds of the most vulnerable people experiencing homelessness in Vermont must leave state-funded motel rooms where they’ve been living as the state winds down its pandemic-era motel voucher program. The move is prompting outcry from municipal leaders and advocates who say many don’t have a place to go. The biggest exodus — about 230 households — is expected on Thursday when they reach a new 80-day limit stay in the motel rooms that the Legislature imposed starting in July. A new 1,110-room cap on the number of motel rooms the state can use to house those people in the warmer months from April through November also kicked in Sunday. The households will be eligible for motel housing again on Dec. 1 as winter sets in.

Police video released that month showed the five officers, who also are Black, beating Nichols as he yelled for his mother about a block from his home. The officers said Nichols was pulled over for reckless driving, but Memphis’ police chief has said there is no evidence to substantiate that claim. A high school English teacher is suing a Wisconsin school district, alleging it did not renew his contract last year because he refused to use the preferred names of two transgender students. Argyle School District Superintendent Randy Refsland said in an email Tuesday night that he could not comment because the matter was being litigated in court. But after one of the students expressed unhappiness with the situation — the student's father was described as a fellow district teacher — the district demanded adherence to the policy of using students' preferred names and pronouns, according to the suit. ATLANTA — Georgia state Rep. Devan Seabaugh is accused of driving under the influence after authorities say he ran into a bicyclist who was riding in the bike lane of an Atlanta street. Seabaugh faces seven charges, including driving under the influence of alcohol, and driving under the influence of drugs, Atlanta Municipal Court records show. The Cobb County politician was arrested Thursday night in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta by a Georgia State Patrol task force that targets drunken drivers. Seabaugh, a Republican, was elected to the Georgia House in a special election in the summer of 2021, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Seabaugh faces Democrat challenger Karl Gallegos in the Nov. 5 general election.

Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes’ office announced Monday that Jenna Ellis, a former Donald Trump attorney and one of the 18 defendants in the Arizona “fake electors” case stemming from the 2020 election, is cooperating with the prosecution. Ellis signed the cooperation agreement Monday morning, according to the announcement, which said prosecutors are dropping the charges against her. “This agreement represents a significant step forward in our case,” Mayes, a Democrat, said in a statement. In 2023, Ellis pleaded guilty in the Georgia election interference case in which Trump was also charged. Those accused of being “fake electors” and the others alleged to have been accomplices are charged with fraud, forgery, and conspiracy.

Officials in Tulsa, Oklahoma, announced the creation of a new commission to recommend how reparations can be made for a 1921 massacre that destroyed a thriving Black community in the city. Both reports called for financial reparations, which Tulsa Mayor G.T. The program would be for survivors of the massacre as well as descendants of victims and other residents of north Tulsa, where the massacre occurred. She praised Bynum for establishing the commission and said reparations can include all items listed, though she strongly supports financial payments.
