Investigating Bathydevius and its adaptations could reveal more about the midnight zone, which is the largest habitat on Earth and accounts for 70% of all seawater on the planet. A study describing the new species published Tuesday in the journal Deep Sea Research Part I. “The deep water column is maybe the last place you’d expect to find a nudibranch,” Robison said. The midnight zone is cold and dark and very forbidding to us terrestrial creatures, yet it is filled with life, albeit life forms adapted to a very different set of challenges than we face. Now, a new analysis by physicists based in China and France suggests the artist had a deep, intuitive understanding of the mathematical structure of turbulent flow. Batchelor’s scaling mathematically represents how small particles, such as drifting algae in the ocean or pieces of dust in the wind, are passively mixed around by turbulent flow. “I think this physical relationship must be embedded in his mind so that’s why when he made this famous ‘Starry Night’ painting, it mimics the real flow,” Huang said. “What I take away from studies like this is that (van Gogh) captured some of this universality in the beautiful (‘Starry Night’),” Beattie added.

Oscar-nominee Jude Law was on hand in Anaheim, California on Friday night at D23 – Disney’s massive fan expo that drew a crowd of 12,000 – to present “Skeleton Crew,” a new “Star Wars” series set to premiere on Disney+ in December. Ahead of unveiling the first-look trailer, Law billed the new series as “a timeless adventure story in the spirit of the Amblin coming-of-age films from the ’80s,” mentioning 1985’s “The Goonies” and “E.T.” from 1982 as examples. I predicted last weekend that the Democrats will find a way to jettison Joe Biden; that likelihood seems to fluctuate daily or even hourly, but for now my prediction stands. Because it is so obvious to me, I had long assumed the Democratic Party would consider it equally obvious. But it is no longer clear to me that the party’s elected officials actually share that assumption. But to the extent that goal conflicts with other, more mundane imperatives, more than a few Democrats seem to view beating Trump as a secondary objective. I wrote about this in the context of Biden’s “save democracy, vote Democrat” rhetoric before the 2022 midterms, but clearly the point merits new elaboration.

This week, two asteroids — one big enough to destroy a city, and the other so large it could end civilization — are set to fly near our planet. Both have a zero percent chance of impacting Earth. And, depending on where you are in the world, you may even be able to see one of them. It is a whopping 7,600 feet long, but it will be too far to spot easily without a strong telescope. On Saturday, at 9:46 a.m. Eastern time, it will zip by Earth at 75 percent of the distance to the moon.

CNN —Hundreds of residents living near Mount Kanlaon in the Philippines were ordered to evacuate Tuesday after the volcano erupted, sending a three-mile tall (five-kilometer) ash column into the sky that caused dozens of flights to be canceled. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said Mount Kanlaon erupted for six minutes on Monday evening, causing a “strong earthquake,” as the agency warned that ash fall and sulphuric odor would affect surrounding villages. Forty-three volcanic earthquakes had been recorded in the 24 hours to midnight Monday, according to the agency’s volcano summary. Images on social media showed an ash cloud shooting into the starry night sky. Situated on Negros, the fourth most populous island of the archipelago, Mount Kanlaon is one of 24 seismically active volcanoes in the country.
