Please refresh the page if you do not see a player above at that time.] Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell speaks Wednesday to the Stanford Business, Government and Society forum. But he also said the timing isn't certain and policymakers need more evidence that inflation is moving toward the Fed's 2% goal. Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic said Wednesday he thinks there could be just one cut this year, though his colleagues on the Federal Open Market Committee have indicated three. Markets expect the Fed to start down the path of easing in June or July, with a total of three cuts coming by the end of 2024.

Justin Sullivan | Getty ImagesFederal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said Wednesday it will take a while for policymakers to evaluate the current state of inflation, keeping the timing of potential interest rate cuts uncertain. "We do not expect that it will be appropriate to lower our policy rate until we have greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably down toward 2 percent," he added. "Recent readings on both job gains and inflation have come in higher than expected," Powell said. The uncertainty about rates has caused some consternation in markets, with stocks falling sharply earlier this week as Treasury yields moved higher.

If the Federal Reserve follows through on plans to lower interest rates it could lead to a stock market bubble, in the view of Neuberger Berman portfolio manager Steve Eisman. The central bank last month penciled in three potential quarter percentage point rate cuts by the end of 2023, along with multiple other cuts coming in future years. I personally think there should be no Fed cuts this year," he said during an interview on CNBC's " Squawk Box ." My actual fear is that if the Fed were actually to cut rates, the market becomes bubblicious and then we have a real problem. Markets in fact have grown nervous this week as hopes have waned for rate cuts.

Stanford, UCLA and USC are in the top 10 schools with grads who have gotten private startup funding. Stanford University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Southern California rank among some of the top schools to produce startup founders that recently got private funding, according to Crunchbase. Other California-based colleges to make the list of schools include the University of California, Los Angeles, University of California, San Diego, and the California Institute of Technology. The data also details the business schools that some of the startup founders attended. The fact that hundreds of new startup founders have been able to secure funding is a bit surprising considering the current state of the venture capital industry.

The meeting that could have been an email is not going away. Even after a pandemic challenged workplace norms, it seems like some corporations are determined to deliver their employees back into a world of lengthy all-hands or workshops. Robert I. Sutton, an organizational psychologist and professor at Stanford University, has a counterintuitive solution if you find yourself stuck in a pointless meeting: just leave. He does this, he says, at least once a week: "I'm a big believer in walking out of things." Sutton is also the co-author of the upcoming book "The Friction Project: How Smart Leaders Make the Right Things Easier and the Wrong Things Harder."
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Jeff Sipe, a private tech career coach and former Google recruiter. Big Tech layoffs were always going to receive backlash — that said, I don't think any of them have been handled perfectly, and many of them could have been avoided. Yes, companies needed to cut down on costs, but more than that, I think layoffs have become trendy. After layoffs, the company's stock price usually goes up, and the board of directors and shareholders (most of whom don't work there) are happy. Anyone can create one for free, using Canva for example, that says, "Impacted by Google Layoffs."

At 27, Pierson has defied the odds that many entrepreneurs, especially Latinas, face. Latina founders run nearly 2 million businesses across the country, but receive less than 2% of venture capital funds. Pierson was one of several Latina entrepreneurs speaking in New York City on Friday at a breakfast for investors and members of the media (disclosure: This reporter was one of the moderators). Focused on funding opportunities for women of color, Pierson and others discussed their trajectories on raising capital, scaling up their businesses and achieving significant revenues. One of the other Latina entrepreneurs who discussed her experience starting a business was Karla Gallardo, the founder of Cuyana, a highly successful lifestyle brand known for its sustainably sourced and premium leather accessories and apparel.

In March, Liu was appointed the CEO of Ancestry.com, a consumer genealogy business valued at around $4.7 billion — making it the industry's largest company. Sandberg was referencing Liu's combative streak, developed as a child growing up in small-town South Carolina in the late 1980s. Here, Liu discusses how her childhood struggles shaped her mindset, her conversation with Sandberg and the self-discovery mission that helped her land Ancestry's CEO job.
A 2019 ranking of business-school admission rates showed Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) at the top of the list of most selective schools. Education specialists Quacquarelli Symonds recently released its 2021 Global MBA Ranking, and Stanford ranked as the best business school in the world. To that end, Insider asked six Stanford business school grads, as well as the assistant dean of MBA admissions and financial aid, for their insights on how to get noticed and tapped by Stanford GBS's extremely selective admissions committee. His top advice for Stanford business school applicants is to not be an imitation of a type. Other Stanford business school alumni validated this advice.
