CNN —For the first time, scientists have found evidence that marine mammals could be inhaling microplastics, according to new research that detected the potentially harmful particles in the breath of bottlenose dolphins off the coasts of Louisiana and Florida. Previous research has discovered the tiny particles present in marine mammals’ tissues from exposure through consumption and then movement from the digestive tract into other organs. “We found that dolphins may be breathing in microplastics, even if they live in rural areas away from high levels of human activity. The researchers are unsure how inhalation of microplastics will affect dolphins, but they suspect it could have an impact on the creatures’ lung health, according to the study. The study team held up petri dishes to the mammals’ blowhole, through which dolphins inhale and exhale.

The very last moment sees various onlookers at the synagogue – including veteran actor Feldshuh – looking agog as Noah greets Joanne warmly. That moment, along with others, prompted reaction about how certain Jewish themes and tropes were handled in the series. It features “over 1,000 contestants, $5,000,000 prize, and many other world records,” the creator MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, said at the time. The 54-page document describes allegations of players being subjected to “unreasonable, unsafe, and unlawful employment conditions” that led to “several” contestants being hospitalized. Last month, a New York Times report detailed some claims of dangerous conditions from unnamed contestants on the set of the show hosted by the 26-year-old Donaldson. MrBeast nor Amazon immediately responded to CNN’s request for comment about the lawsuit. This essay is part of What to Eat on a Burning Planet, a series exploring bold ideas to secure our food supply. Read more about this project in a note from Eliza Barclay, Opinion’s climate editor. That began to change in the 1990s as conservation groups fought to protect all kinds of life in the ocean from overfishing. U.S. fisheries may be much improved, but up to 80 percent of the fish and shellfish on American plates are imported. Much of it comes via obscure international seafood conglomerates that purchase fish from companies that have been accused of fishing illegally and profiting from forced labor, as the nonprofit Outlaw Ocean Project has documented.

YouTube's biggest creator has been embroiled in a string of recent controversies. Donaldson, 26, has generally avoided the controversies that have felled some of his peers during his 12 years online. AdvertisementBut recently, that's begun to change, with fans and video participants speaking out against the star. "It's going to be a mess," said one Amazon insider, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the show. Beyond these new controversies, Donaldson has faced further criticism for an old video clip of him making racist and homophobic comments that has recirculated on social media.

Better known online as MrBeast, Mr. Donaldson, 26, has made a name for himself as a benevolent YouTube star who has racked up hundreds of millions of subscribers for his provocative brand of philanthropy, like the time he paid for 1,000 people to receive cataract surgery. The resulting eight-minute video was hyperbolically titled “1,000 Blind People See for the First Time.”Extravagant prizes have become his calling card. Usually it comes with a dark twist: Once, he offered a man $10,000 a day for each day he was willing to live in a grocery story without leaving. In his most popular video, “$456,000 Squid Game in Real Life!,” 456 people competed in a game show inspired by the dystopian Netflix drama “Squid Game.” (In the Netflix show, down-and-out contestants play deadly versions of children’s games to win $38 million.) Familiar with MrBeast’s content and with the lengths to which those who appear in his videos must go in order to win, many expected outlandish and even potentially risky challenges.

To most of us, the ocean is a no man’s land — a vast, bottomless and uncharted void. It is this lack of exploration and appreciation — particularly of the layer of cold, dark water that begins where light fades, known as the ocean’s twilight zone — that has led us to a very precarious place. Just as we are learning to appreciate the extraordinary service of creatures in the twilight zone, companies that manufacture feed for industrial fish farms, fertilizer and omega-3 supplements are preparing to exploit it. Right now nations are considering authorizing commercial fishing fleets to grind life in the twilight zone into fish meal, fertilizer and plant food. Before they move forward with these plans, it would be wise to hit pause so we can understand how that decision will affect our planet.

It’s also possible, these scientists warn, that deep-sea mining could disrupt the way carbon is stored in the ocean, contributing to the climate crisis. A documentary about deep-sea mining that Sweetman watched in a hotel bar in São Paulo, Brazil, unleashed a breakthrough. However, several countries, including the United Kingdom and France, have expressed caution, supporting a moratorium or ban on deep-sea mining to safeguard marine ecosystems and conserve biodiversity. Earlier this month, Hawaii banned deep-sea mining in its state waters. Many unanswered questions remain about how dark oxygen is produced and what role it plays in the deep-sea ecosystem.

New pterosaur species discovered by Australian farmer
  + stars: | 2024-06-13 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
CNN —An amateur paleontologist has discovered a new species of pterosaur, a flying reptile that lived alongside dinosaurs around 100 million years ago. Kevin Petersen, an avocado farmer and curator of the Kronosaurus Korner fossil museum in northwest Queensland, Australia, unearthed a number of fossilized bones in western Queensland in 2021. Fewer than 25 sets of pterosaur remains belonging to four species have been found in Australia since the 1980s, while more than 100 sets have been found in Brazil and Argentina. In finding Haliskia, Petersen found the most complete specimen of any pterosaur discovered in Australia to this day, Pentland said in the statement, praising Petersen for his “careful preparation” of the remains. “I’m thrilled that my discovery is a new species, as my passion lies in helping shape our modern knowledge of prehistoric species,” he said in the statement.
