This past week saw several pure-play space stocks rally, with leaders up as much as 20% or more, in part driven by what sector analysts said is a "Trump-Elon trade," a nod to the relationship between President-elect Donald Trump and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. Just this week saw Rocket Lab up 41%, Intuitive Machines up 28%, Spire Global up 26%, Planet Labs up 16%, Redwire up 15% and AST SpaceMobile up 10%. But there's a broader market sentiment that's driving these stocks too, said Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Andres Sheppard, who has buy ratings on Rocket Lab, Redwire and Intuitive Machines. "I think there's definitely a risk-on, post-Trump-win rally that's being reflected in this industry," Sheppard told CNBC. Back out even further to take a year-to-date perspective, and this week's top-performing space stocks have broken out of a post-SPAC malaise to triple or even quadruple in 2024.

That's what Spire Global is betting on in its recently announced partnership with AI darling Nvidia . Twelve-year old Spire Global is in the radio frequency sensing business, operating a satellite constellation that collects space-based radio frequency data that can be analyzed and sold as a service. Nonetheless, "at this point in time there is no immediate economic flow from Nvidia to Spire or vice versa," he noted. Spire Global, a small capitalization stock that went public through a SPAC merger in 2021, shot up roughly 40% in response. Spire Global forecasts achieving positive free cash flow this summer, or by the third quarter of 2024.

Maxar Technologies Visual Investigations The $2.8 Billion Hole in U.S. Sanctions on Iran A Times investigation reveals how lax government oversight allowed shadowy oil tankers, covered by American insurance, to fund Iran’s regime. The American Club is one of only 12 major insurers of its kind, and the only one based in the United States. By then, the tankers had transported at least $2.8 billion in crude oil, based on the lowest reported prices of Iranian oil in 2023. The Treasury office has publicly enforced sanctions on the American Club only once in the past 20 years. Ultimately, the office said the American Club did “not appear to have been willful or reckless” and the case was settled.

The latest surge of dark fleet ships began after Russia invaded Ukraine and the West tried to limit Moscow’s oil revenue with sanctions. The ships most likely sell their Russian oil to China above a price limit set by the sanctions. “The price cap is achieving its dual goals: restricting Russia’s oil revenues while keeping Russian oil flowing, and markets stable and well-supplied,” a U.S. Treasury spokesperson told The Times. The spoofing tankers using American insurance show that the practice is not limited to Russian oil alone. The company, Gatik Ship Management, owns a fleet of 50 newly acquired tankers dedicated to the Russian oil trade, the report said.

The U.S. National Reconnaissance Office plans to quadruple the number of satellites on orbit over the next decade. It will need commercial space companies to help do it. "It's helped us improve our reliability so that we can achieve more with more capability at a lower cost," he said. The ambitious game plan speaks to the growing role of commercial space companies in national security work. NRO partners closely with both the U.S. Space Command and the Space Force.
Spire Global at the New York Stock Exchange, August 17, 2021. A pair of space companies received delisting warnings on Friday, according to securities filings, as both ventures' stock prices stood below $1 a share. Small satellite builder and data specialist Spire Global received a notice from the New York Stock Exchange, while spacecraft delivery company Momentus received a notice from the Nasdaq. Momentus' stock closed at 63 cents a share, slipping below $1 a share on Feb. 7. The warnings come as fellow space company Astra seeks an extension from the Nasdaq to regain compliance after it received a delisting warning last year.
Russia’s war on Ukraine has redrawn the global oil map, rerouting a fleet of skyscraper-size tankers on longer voyages as they shuttle crude shipments that are essential to the global economy. The Wall Street Journal analyzed data from the ship-tracking firm Spire Global that showed the paths of about 3,000 such vessels to find those leaving Russian ports across periods before and after the Russian invasion on Feb. 24. Using location-tracking signals shared by ships and authorities, the information shows how fallout from the invasion cut longtime trade ties and left the Kremlin rushing to find the money it needs to fund its war machine.

Netflix's monetization efforts make it an attractive stock despite slowing subscriber growth, Bank of America said Tuesday. Analyst Jessica Reif Ehrlich took over coverage of the stock and double upgraded it to buy from underperform. Ehrlich also has a price target of $370 on Netflix, implying upside of 23.6% from Monday's close. "Despite slower sub growth, we believe efforts to improve monetization via a value-oriented ad tier and significant conversion of password sharers has the potential to drive operating/financial upside." The streaming giant, which is using Microsoft for its ad needs, turned to the tier after years of rejecting the idea as a way to mitigate declines in subscriber growth.
Investing in Space: Cash crunch

CNBC's Investing in Space newsletter offers a view into the business of space exploration and privatization, delivered straight to your inbox. We're now in the final quarter of the year, and for several space companies, it's survival time. They weren't proven businesses and the tide went out," a banker familiar with the sector told me about the environment for space stocks. While not a definitive metric, the cash burn rates of de-SPAC space companies – from AST SpaceMobile to Redwire and more – give a window into the urgency of the situation. Private space companies are feeling the pinch as well.
Space tech startups fall out of VC orbit

Oct 18 (Reuters) - Space technology startups are being forced to limit their sky-high ambitions, as their venture-capital backers turn to safer bets due to the current economic turmoil, VC firm Space Capital said. Investments in space technology companies, which collect, process and analyze space-related data, have fallen 80% in the third quarter to about $1 billion from nearly $5 billion in the year-earlier period, Space Capital said in a report. VC investment volume in space companies fell 44%, compared with a broader market decline of 31%, it added. VC firms "are looking to reduce their exposure to capital intensive companies with low or long-term profitability models," Space Capital's managing partner, Chad Anderson, told Reuters. Many investors who explored aerospace last year have backed away, said William Kowalski, co-founder of Atomos Space, which makes spacecraft that help satellites maneuver in space.
Oct 12 (Reuters) - Satellite launch firm Virgin Orbit Holdings Inc (VORB.O) and Spire Global Inc (SPIR.N) entered into a deal under which the satellite operator will purchase multiple launches over several years starting 2023, the companies said on Wednesday. Spire Global, which is looking to boost its space services business, said that the deal provides flexibility and control over launches instead of it relying on the rideshare market where satellites will launch with others on a large rocket. Cannacord Genuity analyst Austin Moeller said Virgin Orbit's inaugural November launch from British soil is also highly convenient for Spire, which builds its satellites in Glasgow, Scotland. Earlier in January, Virgin Orbit – on its first successful mission since going public – carried satellites for Spire, the U.S. Defense Department, and the Polish company SatRevolution. Virgin puts satellites into orbit using a rocket, LauncherOne, that is mounted on a modified Boeing CO (BA.N) 747 jumbo jet.
Shares of Rocket Lab aren't quite ready for takeoff just yet, according to Credit Suisse. Analyst Scott Deuschle initiated coverage of the space stock with an underperform rating. Along with Rocket Lab, Deuschle initiated shares of Virgin Orbit with an underperform rating, noting both companies could suffer from challenging gross margins. This drawback may prove particularly detrimental to Rocket Lab and drive a downdraft in capital spending among earth intelligence firms, he said. Shares of Rocket Lab have slumped about 66% this year.
