U.S. crude oil rose 1 % on Friday, topping $83 per barrel as consumer prices eased and inventories fall. The recent oil rally has stalled out with West Texas Intermediate largely flat this week, ahead 0.38%, after booking four-straight weeks of gains. U.S. crude oil and gasoline inventories also fell for the week ended July 5, in a sign that summer fuel demand may be finding some life. The tech sector faces a moment of truth in its ambitious climate targets, as the growing power needs of artificial intelligence data centers jeopardize the industry's promise to slash carbon emissions. Goals at risk The energy needs of AI computing pose a significant challenge to Google's and Microsoft's ambitious climate goals. Google aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030 through around-the-clock carbon-free energy on every electric grid where it operates. The premium attached to Tesla's stock is increasingly difficult to justify as the company's core auto business deteriorates while enthusiasm over the effect of artificial intelligence on its future growth could wane, according to UBS. UBS analysts led by Joseph Spak downgraded Tesla to sell, though they increased their price target by $50 to $197 per share. The higher target still implies 18% downside from Thursday's close of $241.03 per share. But taken together, this is only $93 of identifiable value in the current share price, which means future option value represents 61% of today's stock, the UBS analysts said. "Given the lack of visibility and the risk that these growth opportunities materialize on a longer time horizon (or don't materialize at all), we rate the stock Sell."

The market is only driven by a handful of massive tech stocks – and therefore, it's built on a weaker foundation than a market advancing on a broader swath of its constituents. Companies don't lose dominance or stock leadership because they were dominant the last time we had a bull market. We trimmed Nvidia, Meta Platforms, Palo Alto Networks , and five other tech stocks at the beginning of the year. Would the market suddenly become more investible if we broke up the Super Six into say 15 different companies and stocks? However, we don't think they are a reason to bail entirely on any of these names.

Crude oil futures rose Thursday as inflation eased, bolstering hopes that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates later this year. Lower interest rates typically stimulate economic growth, which can bolster crude oil demand. The inflation and interest rate outlook overshadowed mixed signals on oil demand for this year. The IEA is forecasting global oil demand growth will average just under 1 million bpd in 2024 due to subpar economic growth, greater energy efficiency and electric vehicle adoption. OPEC, on the other hand, is much more bullish, forecasting demand growth of 2.2 million bpd as the cartel sees solid economic growth of 2.9% this year.

U.S. crude oil was little changed on Friday but was on pace for a fourth straight weekly gain as falling inventories show an uptick in demand. Oil market analysts have been forecasting a tighter market in the third quarter as summer fuel demand picks up. U.S. inventory data appeared to confirm those forecasts, with crude stocks declining by 12.2 million barrels and gasoline falling by 2.2 million barrels last week. UBS is forecasting that global oil demand will grow by 1.5 million barrels per day, or bpd, this year, above the long-term growth rate of 1.2 million bpd. "As such, we still believe Brent will likely reach the USD $90/bbl mark this quarter," Staunovo said.

Investors who want to support the energy transition should consider backing natural gas as a fuel that can "make a really huge impact" by replacing coal, according to a top analyst at asset manager PGIM. "Natural gas is very complementary to them, it is highly dispatchable and it is very low cost." The U.S. is the largest natural gas exporter in the world, according to the Energy Information Administration. "Pipelines offer a very different kind of risk/reward proposition for an investor than, say, a natural gas producer who is very exposed to the volatility of the natural gas price," Antia said.
