Madrid CNN —From exile in Spain, Venezuela’s opposition leader sat down with CNN en Español on Thursday where he spoke about the “nightmare” of his last days in Caracas and his hope to find a solution to Venezuela’s political crisis. In his first television interview since leaving Venezuela, Edmundo González Urrutia explained the role of the Spanish government in his departure from the Latin American country. Venezuela’s opposition and multiple Latin American leaders refused to recognize Maduro’s victory, which sparked deadly protests during which thousands were arrested. On September 18, the Spanish Senate approved by majority a motion presented by the Popular Party urging the Spanish government to recognize González as the elected president of Venezuela. Regarding the official figures, González says that “there is no evidence to prove they [Maduro’s regime] won.”The opposition candidate said that an inauguration in exile has not been considered.

CNN —Disgraced former Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) President Luis Rubiales was detained and released after questioning upon arriving in Madrid from an international flight, according to Spain’s Civil Guard. A Civil Guard spokesperson confirmed to CNN that Rubiales was detained this morning after landing at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid–Barajas Airport on a commercial flight from the Dominican Republic. He was detained by the Civil Guard’s Central Operative Unit (UCO) on the runway before being driven away in a van. The UCO is a body of the Spanish Civil Guard which investigates and fights serious and organized crime in Spain. Rubiales was released after testifying at the airport’s Terminal 4 Civil Guard unit, Civil Guard said.

CNN —Maxim Kuzminov, a Russian pilot who dramatically defected to Ukraine by flying his helicopter across the border, is dead, according to Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate (GUR). A source at Ukraine’s GUR confirmed to CNN the body of the man found in Spain was that of Kuzminov, but would not comment on how he had died. The shooting took place in a neighborhood where some Russian and Ukrainian expatriates have settled since the war began, according to the Villajoyosa city hall press office. When Kuzminov flew into Ukraine, the two other Russian service members on board the Mi-8 helicopter with him did not know what was happening. “I contacted representatives of Ukrainian intelligence, explained my situation, to which they offered this option: ‘Come on, we guarantee your safety, guarantee new documents, guarantee monetary compensation, a reward,’” the pilot said.

MADRID (Reuters) - Nearly 32,000 migrants have reached Spain's Canary Islands on fragile boats from west Africa this year, passing a previous record posted in 2006, regional authorities said on Sunday. So far this year, 31,933 people have reached the islands, compared with the 2006 small boats crisis when 31,678 people made it to the Canaries, regional authorities told Reuters. Fernando Clavijo, the Canary Islands regional chief, said the figures showed the scale of the humanitarian crisis faced by the islands and called for more help from the Spanish government and the European Union. Its seven islands have become the main destination for migrants from Senegal and other African countries trying to reach Spain, fleeing conflict or seeking a better life. The Spanish government said it would create additional emergency accommodation for some 3,000 migrants in military barracks, hotels and hostels.

CNN —Spanish environmental activists spray-painted a superyacht moored in Ibiza on Sunday. Activists from the environmental group Futuro Vegetal posted a video showing them standing in front of the superyacht named Kaos, holding a banner that says: “You Consume Others Suffer.” The activists then sprayed the vessel with red and black paint. According to multiple shipping industry news sites the yacht belongs to Nancy Walton Laurie, the billionaire heiress of Walmart. The two protesters were detained by the Spanish Civil Guard on Sunday morning and were expected to be released Monday, according to Futuro Vegetal. “The action puts the finishing touch to the “Jets and Yachts, the party is over” campaign, convened by Extinction Rebellion Ibiza who demand the prohibition of private jets and the end of luxury emissions,” Futuro Vegetal said.

CNN —Spanish police have arrested 26 people in recent months for an alleged scheme to use water from illegal wells to grow subtropical fruit, as the country grapples with damaging heat and drought.
