It’s been another eventful year for U.S. air travel. Two weeks later, a federal judge blocked JetBlue Airways’ planned purchase of Spirit Airlines, leaving the smaller, battered budget carrier to fend for itself. Through it all, demand for air travel overall smashed records, and CEOs are optimistic about next year, too. It cost Delta Air Lines more than $500 million and left thousands of stranded customers, with a cancellation tally that topped all of 2019. Travelers wait in the baggage area to check with Delta Airlines representatives at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport on July 20.

In other words: A right-wing faction has coalesced within the usually progressive tech industry, and much of it is preparing to make Washington a second home for the next four years. Trump’s second term won’t be the first administration to have strong influence from the modern tech industry. But just below that level, tech figures are populating some of the most important positions. One closely watched question: How much money will Trump’s tech allies make during his administration? Leamer, the Republican consultant, said he thinks Trump’s tech allies have a different motivation: to prove that they’re right.

Elon Musk walks on Capitol Hill on the day of a meeting with Senate Republican Leader-elect John Thune (R-SD), in Washington, U.S. December 5, 2024. House Democrats Jim McGovern of Massachusetts and Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut say their Republican colleagues in Congress caved to the demands of Elon Musk, sinking a bipartisan government funding bill that would have regulated U.S. investments in China. Congress passed a separate stopgap funding bill over the weekend, averting a government shutdown. "His bottom line depends on staying in China's good graces," McGovern wrote about Musk. The stopgap funding bill, which President Joe Biden signed on Saturday, did not include the two-year suspension of the U.S. debt limit that Trump was seeking.

After killing the government funding bill on Wednesday and hurtling the government toward a shutdown, Trump and Musk dined at Mar-a-Lago with Bezos, who has an icy history with Trump. Elon Musk has been a constant companion to President-elect Donald Trump as Trump meets with foreign leaders — an ever-present personality at Mar-a-Lago since November, even accompanying Trump to Paris on his first foreign trip since winning the election. Musk’s interactions with world leaders alongside Trump are raising questions about the tech leader’s potential influence on U.S. foreign policy over the next four years and the potential for conflicts of interest, Washington insiders say. Since 2014, Trump has traveled to China at least eight times where he had meetings with senior Chinese officials. Asked about Musk’s influence on foreign policy, a former U.S. intelligence official told NBC News: “I’m more concerned about conflicts of interest. Musk has previously expressed an interest in affecting the trajectory of foreign affairs, which could further affect his dealings with world leaders.

Elon Musk waded into Germany’s election on Friday, expressing his support for a far-right anti-immigrant and anti-Islam party that's being monitored by the country’s domestic intelligence agency. “Only the AfD can save Germany,” the tech billionaire wrote on X, referring to the Alternative for Germany party.
