In today’s edition, national political reporter Ben Kamisar examines how House Republicans are growing increasingly aligned with Donald Trump. “One of the main takeaways from this cycle is that the Democratic Party has a lot of work to do on how we’re reaching voters,” Democratic strategist Christina Freundlich said. It’s one more thing a narrow House Republican majority will have to work through early next year. The remaining House Republicans are going to have to summon a different level of unity than they have managed recently to move the party’s legislative agenda. Martin O’Malley, a onetime presidential candidate, announced he’d enter the race for Democratic Party chair, but many more names are already circulating.

Nearly one-third of the cameras in the Border Patrol’s primary surveillance system along the southern U.S. border are not working, according to an internal agency memo sent in early October, depriving border agents of a crucial tool in combating illegal migrant crossings. The officials said there are some areas that are not visible to Border Patrol due to broken cameras. The Border Patrol union in Laredo, Texas noted the issue last week in a post to its Facebook page. The Department of Homeland Security’s budget request to Congress, via the White House, has routinely asked for more money to restore surveillance systems along the border. House Republicans blocked a bipartisan bill earlier this year that would have significantly improved surveillance systems, hired additional Border Patrol agents and resumed border wall construction.

Trump has frequently gone after Harris in personal terms, often based on her race and gender. On Sunday, Trump doubled down, saying: "Crooked Joe Biden became mentally impaired — sad. The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Trump's remarks on Sunday. In a statement about Trump's rally Saturday, Harris campaign spokesperson Sarafina Chitika said Trump has "nothing ‘inspiring’ to offer the American people, just darkness." Some Republicans also pushed back against Trump's comments on Saturday.

More than 50 people were stranded Friday at an eastern Tennessee hospital due to fast-rising water and high winds, after several attempts to airlift them failed during a dangerous rescue operation, Ballad Health officials said. The high winds and water levels prevented helicopter crews from airlifting patients and staff from Unicoi County Hospital in Erwin, Tennessee, hospital officials said. “The situation at the hospital is very dangerous,” Ballad Health said on X, adding the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and National Guard were engaged “in what can only be described as a dangerous rescue operation.”Patients and staff members are evacuated from Unicoi County Hospital on Friday. County leaders in Unicoi initially deployed ambulances but unusually high flooding prevented medics from safely approaching, Ballad Health said. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency has been working with local emergency management agencies to deploy boats for hospital evacuations, but water surrounding and entering the building became dangerous and impassable.

Harris is scheduled to make her first trip to the southern U.S. border in more than three years. “We do have a broken immigration system,” Harris said Wednesday in an interview with MSNBC. In discussing immigration, Harris has increasingly attacked Trump over his efforts to kill a bipartisan border funding deal this year. “She keeps talking about how she supposedly wants to fix the border,” Trump said Thursday at a news conference at Trump Tower. He’s skeptical of Harris’ tougher talk on immigration.

In fact, the Biden administration recently imposed its own set of tariffs, while extending ones first levied during the Trump administration. Take the tariffs the Trump Administration imposed on washing machines in 2018. The washing machine tariffs were part of a broad new tariff regime Trump imposed in an effort to protect American workers from anti-competitive Chinese trade practices. It resulted in what is generally viewed as a “trade war” involving retaliatory tariffs imposed on American goods. The White House gave a rationale similar to the Trump administration when it announced its tariffs.

And we will stop the fentanyl,” Trump said during a recent campaign appearance in Michigan. But fentanyl activists say Trump is at least drawing attention to the issue, whereas the Biden administration, they say, is not. By 2017, the year Trump took office, there were 28,000 deaths from fentanyl. In 2021, during Biden’s first year of office — when many Americans were still stuck at home amid the pandemic — fentanyl deaths rose by 23% to more than 70,000. Trump repeatedly blames the increase in fentanyl deaths on the influx of 10 million migrants who crossed the border during the Biden.

Last month, Norfolk Southern hired Orr away from rival CPKC, paying tens of millions of dollars to buy him out of his contract. A witness told the arbitrator that, in one instance, Orr told the employee that she "was so f------ stupid it was embarrassing." Prior to the announced hiring of Orr, Ancora drew attention to claims about his behavior in emails to two Norfolk Southern board members that CNBC obtained. Norfolk Southern told CNBC in a statement that Ancora's analysis of the value of the route — the Meridian Speedway agreement — "is completely inaccurate and based on a flawed premise," in that it assumes Norfolk Southern is forgoing more revenue than it actually is. Regarding Orr, Norfolk Southern said he has a "track record of improving performance while operating safely and with integrity."

A federal judge on Friday allowed the Biden administration to keep in place a program that officials have used to give temporary legal status to some citizens of Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela. The decision is a notable victory for the White House, which has faced criticism on immigration policy and has used the temporary status program to discourage people from some of the region’s most troubled countries from illegally crossing the southern U.S. border. Texas and other Republican-led states had sued the Biden administration to block the program. But Judge Drew B. Tipton of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas sided with the administration, which considered the program vital to border management. The number of unlawful crossings by nationals from three of the countries in the program has declined, even as the overall number of migrant crossings has continued at historically high levels.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House of Representatives is expected to vote Tuesday on whether to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The vote will be the culmination of months of examination by House Republicans as they've aimed to make immigration and border security a key election issue. Republicans have laid the blame for all of this on the Homeland Security secretary and said that because of it, he needs to go. The House Homeland Security Committee has been holding hearings over roughly the last year where Republicans have repeatedly lambasted Mayorkas. That's the body that would decide whether to convict the secretary or not and if he's convicted then Mayorkas is no longer Homeland Security secretary.

Senators on Sunday released the details of a $118.2 billion aid proposal for Ukraine, Israel and the southern U.S. border, after months of painstaking, closed-door negotiations. The publication of the bill marks a small victory for Senate negotiators who have gone back and forth for months on how to fund border security and whether to continue supporting Ukraine. But just as soon as the Senate back-patting is over, the proposal will face its next major battle: House Republicans. Republican lawmakers have been preparing to greet the Senate bill with hostility. Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Saturday announced a House proposal that would fund Israel alone, a blatant attempt to preempt the Senate's broader foreign aid bill.

By Richard CowanWASHINGTON (Reuters) - Legislation providing $17.6 billion in new military assistance to Israel as it wages war against Hamas was unveiled on Saturday in the U.S. House of Representatives. The funding bill, offered by a House Appropriations panel, could come to a vote in the full House sometime next week, Speaker Mike Johnson said in a letter to members. The Republican-controlled House had previously approved $14.3 billion in new military aid to Israel, but with the requirement that it be paid for by clawing back a chunk of money already targeted for the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. It was unclear whether far-right House members might balk at the funding for Israel without an equal amount of savings elsewhere in the budget. Before new military aid to Israel or Ukraine can be delivered, the House and Senate must pass the same bill before sending it to President Joe Biden, a Democrat, for signing into law.

A core group of negotiators have been laboring for nearly two months over changes to U.S. border and immigration policy and hoped to unveil the legislation later this week. However, the emergency funding package has been delayed months in Congress after Republicans insisted that border policy changes also be included in the package. It remains to be seen whether the border policy changes, which have been negotiated in private with top White House officials, will be enough to satisfy most Republican senators. The group has mostly reached agreements on policy changes, but on Monday was working with Senate appropriators to determine funding levels for the programs. Democrats have bemoaned the Republican decision to tie Ukraine aid with border policy changes.

Eagle Park has become one of the busiest spots on the southern U.S. border for migrants illegally crossing from Mexico. Abbott has said Texas won’t allow Border Patrol agents into Shelby Park anymore, having expressed frustration over what he says are migrants illegally entering through Eagle Pass and then federal agents loading them onto buses. Texas officials have argued that federal agents cut the wire to help groups crossing illegally through the river before taking them in for processing.

They declined to say anything critical of former President Donald Trump, who has endorsed Moreno, and called for fully securing the southern U.S. border. LaRose called earlier Monday for Democratic President Joe Biden to deploy three military divisions to the border, which Dolan said was irresponsible. “We need to work with the Mexican government, we need to be tough with the Mexican government,” he said. ON BOARD THE USS BATAAN (AP) — When attacks with missiles and drones surged in the Red Sea late last year, crewmembers of the USS Bataan worked round the clock to make sure they were shot down before reaching passing merchant vessels. Weeks later, they are still perfecting that operation in training and simulations, along with a dozen other scenarios, despite moving north to the Mediterranean where commercial marine traffic is at little risk. The U.S. Navy is reshuffling its warship deployment in the Middle East to maintain dominance in the region – now eyeing the longer haul as concerns mount that Israel’s war on Hamas in Gaza could set off a regional conflict. Democrats and Republicans agree that a fix is overdue—the last major changes were passed in 1986.
