AdvertisementTogether, the claims describe a US prison medical culture defined by a gross disregard for human life. In dozens of cases in BI's sample, incarcerated people said they were denied emergency medical treatment by corrections officers or medical staff despite obvious medical distress. But according to his complaint and internal grievance files, the prison medical staff denied Kirk's request to be seen at a hospital. In at least a dozen cases BI examined, outside medical authorities, such as hospital doctors, testified that the medical treatment prisoners received was substandard. As Mann's abdominal pain continued over the next two years, according to medical records, prison medical staff ordered X-rays and lab work but did not conduct a thorough oncological screening.

The Federal Aviation Administration on Friday added more temporary bans on drone flights over 30 areas across New York. The announcement comes after the FAA on Wednesday placed initial temporary drone bans over 22 areas in New Jersey amid complaints of strange and often bright flying objects in the night sky. "At the request of federal security partners, the FAA published 22 Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) prohibiting drone flights over critical New Jersey infrastructure," the FAA said in a statement to CNBC on Thursday. The initial bans cover parts of central and northern New Jersey, including Elizabeth, Camden and Jersey City, and will last until Jan. 17. On Saturday, the agencies said they had found "many of the reported drone sightings are, in fact, manned aircraft being misidentified as drones."

Oscar Andrade says every day is an opportunity to rescue migrants in the Arizona desert, where temperatures exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit this year. For Andrade, the number of sets of migrant remains is a cause for worry. According to the researchers’ data, the largest discrepancies in numbers occurred in 2021 and 2020, when Pima County recorded 225 and 206 migrant deaths, respectively, compared with Border Patrol data, which totaled 78 and 43. Border Patrol changes and their impactMartinez and his team of researchers noted that the discrepancies in the numbers of migrant deaths between coroners' offices and Border Patrol began to increase in 2013 and have not stopped growing. Under a border security initiative that ended in 2012, Border Patrol was responsible for trying to find as many deaths as possible in border counties.

TuesdayA quick-moving storm is bringing rain to parts of the East Coast while a few snowflakes fall around the Great Lakes. High elevation snow will bury areas from California’s Sierra Nevada to the Colorado Rockies while rain falls at lower elevations. Conditions will ease throughout the day for California and Nevada but sloppy weather will persist farther east, especially in Utah and Colorado. Dreary weather will extend from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast as the storm that formed late Wednesday pushes east. The Thanksgiving day storm will largely be out of the East by sunrise but lake-effect snow will start up for areas downwind of the Great Lakes as Arctic air rushes over the record-warm lakes.

The storm will roll through parts of the Midwest and South Wednesday night and spread across the East on Thanksgiving Day. Scenario one: A stronger, faster stormThe first scenario would have a storm develop in the Plains Wednesday and strengthen as it heads east. CNN WeatherBut how close to the coast the storm lingers once it reaches the Atlantic Friday will affect post-holiday travel. Wet weather would be minimal for these areas if the storm tracks farther away from the coast Friday. The push of frigid air later this week will also flip the switch on the Great Lakes’ lake-effect snow machine.

But don’t expect a winter wonderland and don’t fall for the headlines and hype. The storm that will bring the snow to the Northeast already brought it to parts of the Midwest. This wet snow will fall overnight and could be heavy at times before it starts to taper off Friday afternoon. Any snow will have to fall heavily in order to accumulate more than an inch or so. Snow will fall across much of central PA over the next 24 to 36 hrs.

Multiple weather fronts will push rain and snow into the Midwest, the Southeast, the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast ahead of Thanksgiving week and some of the year's busiest travel days. Rain, snow expected this weekStarting in the Pacific Northwest, a "long duration atmospheric river" was expected to bring 5 inches of rain and at least 3 inches of snow to Oregon and Northern California beginning as early as Monday, federal forecasters and academic researchers said. The rest of the country is likely to get normal precipitation or below-normal rain during that time, the prediction center said. American Airlines said in a statement Thursday that it expects to set a record for passengers served during the holiday span, with nearly 8.3 million expected. It may be too early to tell whether brewing rain and snow systems will thwart travel and spending plans.

Midway into October, the vibrant fall colors have drawn thousands of visitors to New England’s trails eager to capture the beauty of autumn. But the influx of hikers has led to concerns about overcrowding and safety, especially in popular spots in New Hampshire. State park officials are excited to see so many people enjoying the outdoors, but they urge hikers — both new and experienced — to come prepared and be respectful of nature and others on the trails. Oliver Pierson, director of forestry for Vermont’s Agency of Natural Resources, highlighted the importance of common sense and communication on busy trails. “It’s really about being respectful and enjoying both the scenery and your fellow hikers,” Pierson said.

Permian Resources is primed for strong gains ahead, according to Goldman Sachs. Analyst Neil Mehta initiated coverage on the energy company with a buy rating and 12-month price target of $19, which suggests about 40.6% upside. This year, the stock has lost roughly 1% this year and about 16.7% this quarter amid a rough quarter for the broader energy sector. Permian Resources produces oil and natural gas primarily from the Permian Basin, which is the highest-producing oilfield in the U.S. located in West Texas and southern New Mexico. "We are recommending PR as the stock carries several fundamental elements that position it to outperform peers," Mehta said in a Sunday note to clients.

Lightning sparked the larger of the two wildfires that have scorched southern New Mexico, leaving at least two people dead, destroying 1,400 structures and ravaging more than 25,000 acres, the authorities said on Wednesday. The blaze, known as the South Fork fire, began June 17 amid sweltering temperatures and was 87 percent contained on Wednesday evening, the Bureau of Indian Affairs said in a news release. “The identification of the point of origin and all evidence and data support lightning as the cause of the fire,” the agency said in a statement. “Human activity and factors did not contribute to the cause.”On June 23, the F.B.I. said that it was offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the “person or persons responsible for starting” the South Fork fire and the Salt fire, the other major fire in New Mexico.

A heat wave is bearing down on large parts of America, forcing emergency workers to prepare for what could be record-breaking numbers of people in heat distress. They call themselves “downwinders” — a global community of people who lived near nuclear testing sites. In America, more than 100 nuclear devices were exploded in aboveground tests in New Mexico and Nevada between 1945 and 1962. The 1990 legislation has provided billions of dollars to people exposed to harmful radiation during U.S. nuclear tests or while mining uranium. A nor’easter is forecast to bring an April onslaught of snow, rain, high winds and coastal flooding to the Northeastern United States this week, the National Weather Service said. Rain will lash areas of New York, Southern Connecticut and Northern New Jersey starting on Tuesday. Heavy, wet snow is expected to blanket mainly parts of inland New England starting on Wednesday before tapering off into a light dusting on Friday, the weather prediction center said. “The biggest impact we are worried about from this storm is the heavy, wet nature of the snowfall” in northern New England, said Donald Dumont, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray, Maine. “All of New England is going to get it, but probably more rain in southern New England.”Maine, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey could all, to varying degrees, feel the brunt of the stormy weather.

On turbulent flights, passengers might notice the plane's wings bending and flexing, and that's on purpose, Bangs told BI.
