Now, a report from the American Cancer Society projects that by 2050, the number of people with cancer could rise 77%.
Overall, the top 10 cancer types in both men and women accounted for more than 60% of newly diagnosed cancer cases and cancer deaths, according to the report.
Lung cancer was also the leading cause of cancer deaths, followed by colorectal, liver, breast in women, stomach, pancreatic, esophagus, prostate, cervical and leukemia.
“While we do see lung cancers that are not related to smoking, the number one cause of lung cancer is smoking.
“Interestingly, pollution and other airborne environmental exposures probably increase the risk of lung cancer in many parts of the world.
