This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Karla Trotman, President and CEO of Electro Soft Inc., a US specialty electronics manufacturer in Pennsylvania. My dad and I worked together, and in 2020, I bought them out, so now I'm the owner, president, and CEO. We're still feeling the reverberation from the last round of tariffs, so they never really went away in our industry. Tariff proponents seem to think that enforcing them will cause stateside manufacturing to somehow jump up and be prosperous, but it doesn't really work that way. We really need to understand where our partners are headed so we can flex to meet whatever demand is going to come down the pike.

Images of the nude photos were found on the men’s phones and on Alcala’s iCloud account, according to the indictments. While the indictments don’t specify how the men came under suspicion, the attorney for one of Alcala’s alleged victims has said she reported an incident to the FBI, and one of McKnight’s alleged victims has said she reported him to his supervisor. Seven of the counts specify he took photographs of nude images he found on the victims’ phones, which were found on McKnight’s cell phone. In two of the incidents, McKnight took the alleged victims’ phones after arresting them, the indictment says. One of the former state trooper’s alleged victims described her experience as “really violating” in an interview with KFVS.

CNN —Four separate storm systems are churning their way through the West Pacific simultaneously, a rare occurrence resulting from warmer oceans that threatens to bring more misery to the storm-weary Philippines. Satellite images from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center show the four storms spanning the vast West Pacific basin, from Vietnam to Guam. They are Typhoon Yinxing, Typhoon Toraji, Tropical Storm Usagi and Tropical Storm Man-Yi. The fourth storm on the heels of Usagi is Tropical Storm Man-Yi, which is currently about 430 kilometers (265 miles) east of Rota, Guam. Man-Yi is expected to continue moving west, reaching typhoon strength Friday morning, and could potentially hit the northeastern Philippines by early next week.

CNN —A seaman who fell off a cargo ship survived almost 20 hours at sea before being rescued off Australia’s southeastern coast on Friday, according to emergency services. Marine Rescue NSW vessels were deployed to search for a seaman who had fallen off a cargo ship. Weeks after sticky black balls washed up on the famed beaches of Sydney, Australia, scientists say they have partly solved the mystery behind the “disgusting” blobs. Initially thought to be tar balls, the golf-ball-size debris turned out to be something much different — a combination of decomposed cooking oils, hair and food waste, the New South Wales Environment Protection Authority (EPA) said Wednesday. Balls collected for testing in a laboratory at the University of New South Wales in Sydney. They said preliminary test results indicated that the blobs were tar balls formed when oil comes into contact with debris and water. Sydney Water confirmed there were no issues at the Bondi or Malabar water facilities, while Transport for NSW Maritime reviewed recent weather patterns but found no clear answers, according to the statement.

CNN —In late August, a container vessel sailed out of Angola’s Port of Lobito carrying railway operator Lobito Atlantic Railway’s first shipment of copper from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to the US. That’s about 30 days faster than a road journey, according to Francisco Franca, the CEO of Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR), a consortium of firms that took over operations of the railway in January. The ship took Lobito Atlantic Railways first shipment of copper to the US. “Lobito Corridor is not just a railway line, but is the economic development along the corridor,” said Franca, the CEO of LAR. CNN —More severe weather is expected in the South and the Southern Plains Monday, including in Oklahoma, where residents are surveying the destruction from tornado-spawning storms that injured at least 11 people and leveled homes over the weekend. Scientists called Campeche an archaeological “blank spot” in the Maya Lowlands, an area spanning what is now Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and southeastern Mexico, and which the Maya inhabited from about 1000 BC to AD 1500. Like other large capital cities from Maya sites, Valeriana had a reservoir, a ball court, temple pyramids and a broad road connecting enclosed plazas. In total, the researchers identified 6,764 structures in Valeriana and in other rural and urban settlements of varying sizes. In the north, Maya sites such as Chichén Itzá are highly visible. Morales-Aguilar’s work on Maya settlements in Guatemala aligns closely with the new findings, he told CNN in an email.
