A group of Amazon delivery drivers hold a labor strike at the DAX7 Amazon Sortation Center in South Gate. Amazon should be considered a "joint employer" of some of its contracted delivery drivers, a regional director for the National Labor Relations Board said Wednesday. Amazon has fought to avoid being designated as a joint employer of its sprawling network of contracted delivery companies. Over the past year, the Teamsters has stepped up its efforts to organize Amazon delivery and warehouse workers. Since then, it's led a number of strikes at Amazon delivery facilities, while a labor group at an Amazon warehouse on New York's Staten Island opted to affiliate with the Teamsters in June.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man who spent nearly 30 years in prison for kidnapping, robbery and rape has been declared innocent and freed, Los Angeles County prosecutors announced Tuesday. DNA testing helped exonerate Gerardo Cabanillas in a 1995 attack on a couple sitting in a parked car in the city of South Gate, the county district attorney's office said in a statement. Cabanillas was convicted in 1996 and spent 28 years in prison. DNA testing on the rape kit showed that two other people committed the assault, the group said in a statement. No other suspects were ever arrested, although one man later confessed to committing one of the crimes, the Innocence Project said.

☆ FDA advisors recommend replacing original Covid vaccine with bivalent omicron shots for all doses

The Food and Drug Administration's independent advisory committee on Thursday unanimously recommended replacing Pfizer and Moderna's original Covid vaccine used in the U.S. for everyone's first two immunizations with the new bivalent omicron shots. Instead, the drugmakers' bivalent omicron shots that target the omicron BA.5 subvariant as well as the original strain would be used for the entire vaccination series. Currently, Pfizer's and Moderna's omicron shots are only authorized as a booster, while the first two doses are still their old shots based on the original Covid strain. The FDA has proposed moving to a system that resembles how the agency updates and rolls out flu shots every year. The agency would select a Covid vaccine formulation in June to target the variant that is expected to dominate in the fall and winter.

The latest omicron boosters are 84% effective at keeping seniors 65 and older from being hospitalized with Covid-19, according to a study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday. Seniors who received the omicron booster had 73% more protection against hospitalization than those who only received two or more doses of the original vaccines that were not updated to target omicron, according to the CDC. In a larger study that looked at more more than 15,000 adults ages 18 and older, the omicron booster was 57% effective at preventing hospitalization. U.S. health officials have repeatedly called on everyone who is eligible to get an omicron booster ahead of the holidays.

Scientists at Columbia University in New York City found the new boosters did not produce a better antibody response in humans against BA.5 than the first-generation vaccines. Hotez said there should also be investigations into how the boosters perform against emerging omicron subvariants such as XBB and BQ.1., as the currently dominant BA.5 declines in circulation. It could be the case that the new boosters perform better against these emerging variants than the first generation shots do, Hotez said.
