CNN —Russia has launched one of the largest aerial attacks on Ukraine, Ukraine’s foreign minister said, hitting energy infrastructure across the country, killing at least two people, and causing widespread damage. Strikes were reported in several major cities, from Odesa in the south, Dnipro in the east to RIvne in the west. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said approximately 120 missiles and 90 drones were launched overnight in the Russian attack. Unfortunately, some facilities sustained damage from direct hits and falling debris,” Zelensky said Sunday morning. CNN —Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Russia’s war in Ukraine will end “faster” when Donald Trump takes over as US president. Trump, who was elected for a second term earlier this month, has repeatedly claimed that the Ukraine-Russia war would not have started if he had been president. In July, he said he could settle the war in one day. Throughout his campaign, the president-elect and his running mate, JD Vance, cast strong doubts on continued US commitment to Kyiv. The war has been ongoing for more than two and a half years, following the large-scale invasion of Russian forces in February 2022.

CNN —Russia and Ukraine have exchanged record numbers of drone strikes, with Moscow launching a total of 145 drones on Saturday night – the most ever in a single night-time attack of the war. “Last night, Russia launched a record 145 Shaheds and other strike drones against Ukraine,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday. Shahed drones are cheap, one-way attack drones. The UAVs were shot down over the Moscow regions of Ramenskoye, Kolomna and Domodedovo, Andrey Vorobyov, governor of Moscow region, said. The previous largest drone attack on Moscow was in September, when Russia said it destroyed at least 20 Ukrainian attack drones.

CNN —Ukraine launched a drone attack on a Russian chemical plant in the western city of Tula overnight on Friday into Saturday, according to the country’s security service. According to the SBU, Aleksinsky chemical plant was hit by at least 13 Ukrainian drones, resulting in explosions and clouds of smoke following the attack. Social media footage verified by CNN shows the attack on Aleksinsky chemical plant, which lies around 120 miles (200 km) south of Moscow, launched by Ukraine’s SBU Security Service and Special Operations Forces. The security service is carrying out a “comprehensive operation” against facilities in Russian territory that are involved in the war in Ukraine, a source in the SBU said. The governor of Tula region, Dmitriy Miliayev, said a drone attack overnight from Ukraine was foiled by Russia, but did not mention the chemical plant, in a statement on Saturday.

CNN —Ukraine’s army chief has warned that his forces are facing “one of the most powerful Russian offensives” since the start of the war as Russia claimed it captured more settlements on the eastern frontline. CNN —Germany has begun new controls at all of its land borders as part of a crackdown on migration, placing restrictions on a wide area of free movement known as the Schengen Zone and stirring anger among its European neighbors. From Monday, as well as existing border controls with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland, Germany will now also have internal border controls with France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark. Berlin will have the power to reject people at all land borders, a statement from the Interior Ministry said. The move marks how far Germany has shifted in recent years on the flashpoint issue of migration. Under European Union rules, member states have the ability to temporarily reintroduce border control at internal borders in the event of a serious threat to public policy or internal security.

CNN —Britain’s royal family has publicly wished Prince Harry a happy birthday, their first such message since 2021 to mark the milestone of him turning 40. A post was shared on X and Instagram with the message: “Wishing The Duke of Sussex a very happy 40th birthday today!”It was accompanied by an image of Harry smiling, and a birthday cake emoji. Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, have been living in California since 2020 after stepping down as working members of the British monarchy. Interactions between Harry and other senior royals have been scant: Harry visited Charles following the King’s cancer diagnosis earlier this year but spent just 45 minutes in his company. Harry is thought to be spending his 40th with the Duchess of Sussex and their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
