CNN —Gavin Creel, a Tony-winning Broadway veteran known for his work in productions of “Hello, Dolly!” “Waitress” and “The Book of Mormon,” has died, according to his representative. Matt Polk, a representative for Creel, told CNN that the actor’s passing was confirmed by Creel’s partner Alex Temple Ward. “As an award-winning Broadway star, he brought irrepressible verve, passion, and boundless energy to his onstage roles while devoting his offstage time to advocacy and community-building,” an obituary provided by Polk stated. Creel played the role of Dr. Pomatter in Sara Bareilles’ “Waitress” in the 2019 Broadway production and reprised the role on London’s West End in 2020. Creel is survived by his mother Nancy Clemens Creel and father James William Creel, his sisters, Ward and his dog Nina.

Tom Porton’s remit as a teacher at James Monroe High School in the Bronx was English grammar and literature. Mr. Porton died on July 12 at 74 in an assisted living center in the Bronx. No cause was given, but he had been using a wheelchair and an oxygen tank for months, his son, Christopher Porton, said. Mr. Porton’s title at Monroe, coordinator of student affairs, hardly captured his impact. A bearded bear of a man, Mr. Porton was, in 1995, the first New York City teacher inducted into the National Teachers Hall of Fame.

“Kimberly Akimbo” won last year’s Tony Award for best musical, and “Parade” won the Tony for best musical revival. Only “Kimberly Akimbo” and “Sweeney Todd” are still running on Broadway, and if you want to see them in New York, now’s the time: “Kimberly Akimbo” has announced plans to close on April 28 and “Sweeney Todd” is expected to end its run on May 5. “Kimberly Akimbo” is planning a national tour that is scheduled to start in Denver in September. A “Shucked” tour is to begin in Nashville in November, and a “Parade” tour is to begin in January in Schenectady, N.Y., and then Minneapolis. “Some Like It Hot” had announced an intention to tour starting this fall but has not announced any venues.

☆ Stephen Sondheim Doesn’t Want to Be Your Savior - The New York Times

It should be noted that, when he was alive, Mr. Sondheim was aware of and amused by rampant tendencies to deify him. Consider this sardonic ditty from a show called “Sondheim on Sondheim,” a 2010 Broadway revue commemorating his 80th birthday. He wrote the song in response to a 1994 headline in New York magazine that asked, “Is Stephen Sondheim God?” His musical answer: “You have to have something to believe in. There’s a half-voiced fear among musical acolytes, understandable in a time in which theater itself is newly under siege, that on some level Stephen Sondheim represents the end of the line for a once-flourishing art form. Yet none, with the qualified exception of Mr. Miranda, seem likely to engender the kind of enduring, passionate cult that Mr. Sondheim has inspired.

On Monday night, about 500 people gathered in the Hudson Yards neighborhood of Manhattan for the fourth-annual gala for the Shed, the $475 million arts center that opened in 2019. It has since hosted a concert series by the director Steve McQueen and Quincy Jones and is currently staging Stephen Sondheim’s final musical, “Here We Are.”For the gala, the Shed’s colossal main hall was transformed into a carpeted room with tables spread among low, blobby couches. “I feel like I’m in NASA,” one guest said, adding that the venue felt big enough to accommodate a rocket launch. The evening honored M&T Bank, which has partnered with the center since it began, and the Santo Domingo family, who are longtime supporters. The crowd included the ballerina Misty Copeland, who is also a board member; the designer Wes Gordon; and the hip-hop duo the Dragon Sisters, who are part of the Shed’s Open Call program, which commissions projects from emerging artists in New York.

☆ MasterVoices Puts on a Starry Show With a Shoestring Budget

There’s a lot of Stephen Sondheim in New York at the moment: the premiere staging of his last musical, “Here We Are,” and star-studded revivals of “Merrily We Roll Along” and “Sweeney Todd” on Broadway. And for one weekend this month, there was also one more show of his on: “The Frogs.”This endearingly weird, Aristophanes-inspired musical — created with Burt Shevelove and famously premiered at a Yale University swimming pool in 1974 — hasn’t been onstage in New York since a heavily revised 2004 revival that Sondheim conceived with Nathan Lane, who also performed the role of Dionysos. Few local institutions have the skill or interest to pull off “The Frogs” — with its bookish references and ironic-then-impassioned music — but it’s typical, delightful fare for MasterVoices and its artistic director, Ted Sperling, who mounted and conducted a concert staging of the musical at the Rose Theater. (Lane was there, too, now as a host guiding the audience through the show.)

London CNN —Five climate protesters from the activist group Just Stop Oil disrupted a performance of the musical “Les Misérables” at the Sondheim Theatre in London’s West End on Wednesday night. Just Stop Oil said the protesters locked themselves to the set using flexible bicycle locks at around 8:50 p.m. local time, which theater technicians were unable to remove. In a video Just Stop Oil posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, the audience can be heard booing at the protesters and telling them to get off the stage. “Like the citizens of Paris in 1832, you have locked your doors, while the young face slaughter on the streets. We will inherit a scorched earth, unfit to live in and our politicians will be long gone,” Just Stop Oil said.

On Broadway, Off Broadway, in special events and out of town, living authors are collaborating with dead ones. Some otherwise viable shows, like “Annie Get Your Gun,” need surgery because their racial or gender assumptions are now unacceptable. Others, like “Show Boat,” are merely falling out of copyright, with heirs eager to find a way to remonetize their property. And some — well one — are “Here We Are,” the musical Stephen Sondheim was working on when he died in November 2021. Directed by Joe Mantello and with a book by the comic playwright David Ives, it will reflect a very unusual collaboration indeed.

Giddens amassed the songs on “You’re the One” over more than a decade, channeling and mixing favorite styles, mingling homages and hybrids. CNN —Paul Reubens, who found fame as the quirky man-child character Pee-wee Herman, has died, his publicist announced. It was after college that Reubens created the iconic character Pee-wee Herman while a member of the famed Los Angeles improv group, The Groundlings. Paul Reubens as Pee-wee Herman in 2009. The HBO broadcast of the show introduced the Pee-wee Herman character to a national audience. In 2010, he produced, co-wrote and starred in an updated revival of “The Pee-wee Herman Show” in Los Angeles.
