Opinion | The Rise of Progressivism Among the Educated Elite

To the Editor:Re “The Sins of the Educated Class,” by David Brooks (column, June 7):Mr. Brooks’s insightful column omits one problem. Many “elite” parents and students have never really interacted with “real” average Americans. Don’t only blame the students for their attitudes and behaviors; they are built into our societal structure. Current scholars at elite schools are deprived of the great daily lessons and educational opportunities that I had. Those who take advantage of such experiences would benefit greatly, and so would the country.

But the FBI said this week they’ve arrested the mystery man who entered her Madrid apartment building that night: her estranged husband. She was planning a trip to Barcelona with her friends on February 5, her brother told CNN, making her sudden lack of contact more concerning. Spanish firefighters entered her apartment for a welfare check and she was nowhere to be found, court documents said. He said access to investing can help solve this conundrum, while also pondering if the expectation for everyone to receive Social Security benefits at age 65 has become archaic. Worsening the outlook is a Social Security system that's said it will not be able to pay full benefits by 2034. The 71-year-old believes the American retirement system has entered such a deep crisis that it has become a once-in-a-generation issue. That's because this both can benefit individuals and help ensure the long-term health of Social Security. Increasing lifespans create further difficulties when trying to improve the retirement system, Fink said.

Plans that strengthen infrastructure for temporary and permanent affordable housing, and increase local support for demographics most vulnerable to homelessness, were consistently successful. Building paths to permanent housing in those cities improved overall housing access, researchers said. But Seattle has higher rates of unsheltered homelessness, so resources were better directed to building more temporary housing options. Chicago and New York have seen longer-term success in reducing homelessness, but both saw a spike between 2022 and 2023. The main driver of homelessness is the severe housing shortage across the country, so the most fundamental solution is creating more affordable housing.

In 2021, the clothing brand teamed up with the carbon-accounting startup Watershed to track carbon emissions, mostly from Everlane's supply chain, using data collection. Everlane is one of several companies using carbon-accounting startups to track emissions and put a dollar amount on their carbon footprints. Investment by venture-capital firms in carbon-accounting startups surged from $60 million in 2020 to $767 million in 2022, according to PitchBook. But it's challenging to precisely monitor this since companies' emissions are not the same, and they often overlap. The startup works with small, midsize, and enterprise companies, including Virgin Atlantic.

The "sponge city" initiative was designed to make greater use of lower-impact "nature-based solutions" to better distribute water and improve drainage and storage. A total of 30 pilot sponge cities were selected in 2015 and 2016. By last year, only 64 of China's 654 cities had produced legislation to implement sponge city guidelines, researchers said in January. Even if sponge city measures had been implemented in full, they would have been unable to prevent this year's disasters. This year's heavy rain hit cities in the normally arid north, where sponge city development is less advanced.
