The Golani Brigade is regarded as an elite Israeli infantry unit and has been deployed to southern Lebanon as part of Israel’s ground operation there. Sunday’s assault is also the single bloodiest attack on IDF troops inside Israel since the beginning of the war last October. Amitai Alon, who was killed in the drone attack on Sunday. But the drone sent by Hezbollah at the weekend managed to slip through without triggering Israel’s alert systems. In June, Hezbollah released a nine-minute video filmed by a drone showing civilian and military locations in and around one of Israel’s largest cities, Haifa.

Further unrest was expected on Tuesday, when a military court is expected to decide whether to extend the soldiers’ detentions. Since the start of the war, the Israeli military has captured at least 4,000 Gazans, mostly from inside Gaza, and brought them to Sde Teiman, a military base in southern Israel, for detention and interrogation. Former detainees and some Israeli soldiers have said that guards routinely abuse Gazans held at Sde Teiman; at least 35 detainees have died either at the site or shortly after leaving it. Video Israeli protesters broke into the Sde Teiman military base in support of the detained reservists. Neither the professor nor the Israeli military would confirm that claim.

Tensions were running high on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border on Monday in anticipation of an escalation in hostilities, after Israel’s security cabinet authorized its leaders to decide on the nature and timing of an Israeli military response to a deadly rocket attack from Lebanon last weekend. The Israeli military said overnight that its aerial defense systems successfully intercepted an unmanned aircraft that crossed from Lebanon into northwestern Israel. The Israeli military did not immediately comment on those attacks. Hezbollah has denied responsibility for the rocket attack Saturday that struck a soccer field in Majdal Shams. But the Israeli military said the type of rocket used in the attack is Iranian-made and carries more than 50 kilograms (110 pounds) of explosives.

Scientists say that this measurement, known as excess deaths, can provide a truer indication of the toll and scale of conflicts and other social upheaval. And Israel has not permitted researchers to enter the enclave since the start of the war last October. Credit... Bashar Taleb/Agence France-Presse — Getty ImagesIn an interview, Mr. Spagat cited other reasons to be cautious when discussing excess deaths in Gaza. Around 9,000 deaths have been directly attributed to the war since then by Gaza’s health ministry. The subject of excess deaths is sensitive because it touches on the collateral cost of Israel’s war against Hamas.

But Mr. Netanyahu’s statement on Sunday night dampened those expectations, since it appeared to lessen the chances of a compromise with Hamas over the length and permanence of the cease-fire. Mr. Netanyahu’s grip on power relies on the support of two far-right parties opposed to any agreement that would leave Hamas in power in Gaza. “The efforts of the military in Gaza may help him get more from Hamas,” Mr. Shtrauchler said. Additionally, Mr. Netanyahu may be trying to stave off the collapse of his coalition until the end of July, when Parliament goes on recess. “He’s trying to create room for maneuver — and for that, he needs time,” Mr. Shtrauchler said.

Israel’s Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that the military must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox Jewish men, a decision that threatened to split Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government amid the war in Gaza. In a unanimous decision, nine judges held that there was no legal basis for the longstanding military exemption given to many ultra-Orthodox religious students. The court’s ruling pits secular Jews against the ultra-Orthodox, who say their study of scripture is as essential as the military to defending Israel. Mr. Netanyahu has called for legislation that would generally maintain the exemption for the religious students. More than 2,000 Haredim sought to join the military in the first 10 weeks of the war, according to military statistics.

Mr. Gallant was invited to Washington by his counterpart, Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III, according to Mr. Gallant’s office. “The United States is our most important and central ally,” Mr. Gallant said shortly before his departure. The sanctions, if imposed, would not hold up the military aid that was just approved in Congress. The Israeli military disciplined three of the unit’s commanders after the investigation. While the hostage negotiations between Israel and Hamas have continued, the Israeli military hasn’t let up on airstrikes in Gaza. The Israeli military also said that it “continued to fight in the Gaza Strip,” highlighting that the agreement to pause the fighting was not yet in place. The Israeli government said in a statement that the hostages would be released in four phases during the pause in fighting, with at least 10 hostages released at each stage. The pause would allow for an increase in humanitarian aid to Gaza, through both the Egyptian and Israeli borders. If the multiday pause holds, it would be the longest halt in hostilities since the start of the 47-day war.

Yemen’s Houthi militia claimed an attempted attack on southern Israel on Tuesday, saying it had launched a “large batch” of ballistic and cruise missiles as well as drones toward Israeli targets. The Israeli military did not say who was behind the attacks. Last week, Abdulaziz bin Habtour, prime minister of the Houthi government, said the Houthis might attack Israeli ships in the Red Sea. Even the potential of Houthi attacks on southern Israel means that “Israel must now allocate capabilities that otherwise would have been used elsewhere,” Mr. Sobelman said. The Israeli military, in contrast, maintains high-tech air defense systems and is backed by staunch U.S. government support.

There are also signs of unease within Israel over moving from one fossil fuel to another. Environmentalists say that the dominance of gas in powering the Israeli economy and the influence of the petroleum industry mean that insufficient resources are going into developing clean energy. “We are hostages in a way,” said Elad Hochman, executive director of Green Course, an advocacy group. As for Chevron, though it does not disclose financial results from its Israeli operations, its executives say it is a profitable business that can be a springboard for expansion. “It is a very nice, attractive position,” Mr. Neff, the Chevron president, said, adding that the company has the opportunity “to grow our business substantially in the next few years.”Gabby Sobelman contributed reporting.
