CNN —Police in Australia said a woman was forced to fend off a deadly tiger snake in her vehicle while driving 50 miles per hour on a freeway outside Melbourne. The woman told the officers that she had been traveling 80 kilometers per hour (50 miles per hour) when she felt something on her foot and looked down to find a tiger snake — one of the world’s most venomous serpents — slithering up her leg. Tim Nanninga of Melbourne Snake Control, who was called to the scene to capture and relocate the snake, said the woman in Melbourne was very fortunate. “It’s a miracle how she got off the road and safely parked the car,” he told CNN affiliate 9News. Experts say the recent tropical weather Melbourne has experienced is drawing snakes out of creeks and riverbeds, 9News reported.

TOKYO — Mount Fuji has finally gotten its iconic snowcap, meteorologists in Japan said Thursday, more than a month later than it did last year and the latest of any year in 130 years of record-keeping. The previous record was in 2016, when Mount Fuji’s first snowfall arrived on Oct. 26, while last year the first snow was on Oct. 5. Mount Fuji, a national symbol of Japan, is a pilgrimage destination and UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts hikers from all over the world. Police said a woman who was found in a remote Australian mountain range after going missing for almost two weeks was "dazed and unwell" but alive after suffering a snake bite in remote wilderness. She was last seen driving a hire car in the national park on Oct. 15. "We held grave concerns for the missing woman and [are] very glad she’s been found safe and reasonably well."
