CNN —A powerful “bomb cyclone” will combine with an atmospheric river to unleash over a month’s worth of rain, hurricane-force wind gusts and feet of mountain snow to parts of the Pacific Northwest and Northern California. This bomb cyclone will work with an atmospheric river, a long plume of water vapor moving like a river through the atmosphere, to wring out heavy rainfall and significant mountain snowfall in the Pacific Northwest and Northern California beginning Tuesday. The pair will stall along the coast and hammer the area with hazardous conditions through the week and into the weekend. Rainfall of this magnitude is expected to cause significant urban flooding, debris flow on roadways and river flooding. BOISE, Idaho — A federal judge has temporarily halted the planned execution of an Idaho man on death row whose first lethal injection attempt was botched earlier this year. Thomas Eugene Creech was scheduled to be executed by lethal injection Nov. 13 — roughly nine months after the state first tried and failed to execute him. Execution team members tried eight locations in Creech’s arms and legs on Feb. 28 but could not find a viable vein to deliver the lethal drug. Creech’s defense team also has other legal cases underway seeking to stop him from being put to death. He has been in prison for half a century, convicted of five murders in three states and suspected of several more.

TOKYO — Mount Fuji has finally gotten its iconic snowcap, meteorologists in Japan said Thursday, more than a month later than it did last year and the latest of any year in 130 years of record-keeping. The previous record was in 2016, when Mount Fuji’s first snowfall arrived on Oct. 26, while last year the first snow was on Oct. 5. Mount Fuji, a national symbol of Japan, is a pilgrimage destination and UNESCO World Heritage site that attracts hikers from all over the world. It usually starts getting snow in early October, about a month after the end of the summertime hiking season. Arata Yamamoto reported from Tokyo, and Mithil Aggarwal reported from Hong Kong.
