Products displayed at the Schneider Electric SE booth at the International Photovoltaic Power Generation and Smart Energy Expo in Shanghai, China, on Thursday, June 13, 2024. The chief executive of French power-equipment maker Schneider Electric said on Thursday that the firm's $850 million deal to take a controlling stake in U.S.-based liquid cooling company Motivair will help to bolster its offering to fast-growing and energy-intensive data centers. "We've always said we are going to be agile in respect to acquisitions and targets out there that fit exactly into the strategy of Schneider Electric," Schneider Electric CEO Peter Herweck told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" on Thursday. Herweck said the all-cash deal to acquire an initial 75% controlling interest in the equity of Motivair, which was announced on Thursday, was "rich, but not overly expensive" and "fits great" with the firm's strategy. The acquisition takes place as a global rush for the next wave of generative AI coincides with increasing public scrutiny on environmental concerns, with technology giants recently pivoting to nuclear in an attempt to power its AI ambitions.

Thyssenkrupp hydrogen IPO calls for leap of faith

Once known as the Swiss army knife of climate change for its myriad potential applications in heating, heavy industry and vehicles, green hydrogen has fallen to earth. High fossil fuel prices have also made green hydrogen more affordable relative to other types made from gas. Yet green hydrogen is mostly confined to large-scale industrial usages like steel and ammonia manufacturing. López Borrego will do well to get his IPO away at 3 billion euros without a tangible discount. Switching an average European steel site to green hydrogen could cost 7 billion euros, according to a Hydrogen Europe report.

The London Stock Exchange and British officials are ramping up efforts to build a robust pipeline of Chinese firms, trading on London's status as Europe's deepest capital market. Edwards said he thought London was "an obvious choice" for many Chinese companies "given the issues around the U.S.-China relationship." However, the China-Switzerland Connect - an eight-month-old rival scheme - is gaining more traction among Chinese companies, partly due to a relatively easier process. The London Stock Exchange is "actively looking at how they can address some of the issues," Edwards said. Edwards said officials have identified hundreds of Chinese companies that could potentially issue GDRs in London and "are actively approaching them at the moment."

Jan 17 (Reuters) - India's Maharashtra has entered a $2.5 billion partnership with Taiwan's Gogoro Inc (GGR.O) and a local automotive systems supplier to build electric vehicle (EV) battery-swapping and charging stations in the state, the parties said on Tuesday. The Indian company, Belrise Industries Ltd, and Gogoro will form an equal-stakes joint venture and invest the amount over eight years with the Maharashtra government. The Indian government has been looking to cut emissions and pollution in major cities while reducing its oil import bill. Battery-swapping, which involves electric vehicle owners swapping their batteries for a fully-charged one at a utility station, is fast emerging as a key approach to EV charging. While battery-swapping helps reduce long charging times, the lack of standards for batteries across vehicles is hurting mass adoption.
As a bullet train speeds by in the background, a liquid hydrogen tank towers over solar panels and hydrogen fuel cells at Panasonic's Kusatsu plant in Japan. Combined with a Tesla Megapack storage battery, the hydrogen and solar can deliver enough electricity to power the site's Ene-Farm fuel cell factory. As bullet trains whiz by at 285 kilometers per hour, Panasonic's Norihiko Kawamura looks over Japan's tallest hydrogen storage tank. The 14-meter structure looms over the Tokaido Shinkansen Line tracks outside the ancient capital of Kyoto, as well as a large array of solar panels, hydrogen fuel cells and Tesla Megapack storage batteries. The power sources can generate enough juice to run part of the manufacturing site using renewable energy only.
China aims to reach peak carbon emissions in 2030. Two years ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping formally announced the world's second largest economy would strive for peak carbon emissions in 2030, and carbon neutrality in 2060. Emerging leader in offshore wind? The U.K. and the rest of Europe are each expected to add about 10 gigawatts of offshore wind power in the next three years, according to IEEFA Research. Overenthusiastic measures to force local areas to cut carbon emissions last year resulted in a power shortage that disrupted factory production.
