London CNN —Microsoft has violated European Union antitrust laws by bundling Teams with its other popular applications for businesses, EU officials said Tuesday, marking the bloc’s latest challenge to a US tech giant. If confirmed, the preliminary findings of an EU investigation could lead to a fine of up to 10% of Microsoft’s global revenue, which totaled $211 billion in its latest financial year. Apple, which has denied wrongdoing, also faces a huge fine if the charges are confirmed. “Preserving competition for remote communication and collaboration tools is essential as it also fosters innovation on these markets. If confirmed, Microsoft’s conduct would be illegal under our competition rules,” she added.

Washington CNN —Microsoft will no longer sell its Teams collaboration software as a bundled product with its Office 365 suite anywhere in the world, the company said Monday, in the face of antitrust concerns. The decision to separate Teams from Office globally extends a previous announcement last year affecting only the European Union. And it comes after rivals such as Salesforce’s Slack complained in 2020 that Microsoft’s practices were a form of anticompetitive self-dealing. Slack’s complaint led to a European Commission antitrust investigation of Microsoft that is still ongoing. Monday’s announcement appears aimed at allaying some of those concerns, allowing customers worldwide to buy Microsoft’s Office software without Teams included and the ability to buy Teams as a standalone product for business customers.

Microsoft Teams app is seen on the smartphone placed on the keyboard in this illustration taken, July 26, 2021. Yet Microsoft has arguably created a lot more value using its market clout. Back in 2016, Slack was the hottest new product for helping office workers communicate with over 4 million users. Combining Teams with its Office 365 and Microsoft 365 software bundles gave the messaging and collaboration app a big leg up. Microsoft said on a call in April that Teams had over 300 million monthly users.

Washington CNN —European officials are investigating whether Microsoft’s practice of bundling its Teams software with Office 365 is anticompetitive, the European Commission said Thursday. The EU probe follows a formal complaint by Microsoft’s rival, the Salesforce-owned Slack, in 2020, alleging that Microsoft has illegally circumvented competition. By packaging Teams together with its “well-entrenched” productivity suite, including apps such as Word and Outlook, Microsoft could be effectively blocking customers from seeking out rival collaboration tools, the Commission said. “We respect the European Commission’s work on this case and take our own responsibilities very seriously,” said a Microsoft spokesperson. We first need to identify indeed if there is a breach of antitrust considerations.”The in-depth investigation reflects rising EU antitrust scrutiny for Microsoft, which was last fined on a competition violation in 2013 for not honoring a commitment to give European consumers a choice in web browsers.

Photo: Bryan Bedder for The Wall Street JournalLidiane Jones, the new chief executive of Slack, is betting that the future of the messaging app—purchased by software giant Salesforce for $27.7 billion about two years ago—will rest on the combination of their technologies using generative artificial intelligence. Corporate technology leaders have questioned whether the addition of Slack’s collaboration and communications features makes Salesforce’s flagship customer-relationship-management software that much more useful. But the rise of generative AI, the technology behind ChatGPT, has prompted some to reassess the value of combining the two platforms.

Salesforce reported about $402 million in Slack subscription and support revenue in the fiscal third quarter ending Oct. 31. Meanwhile, on Wednesday Salesforce said it would lay off 10% of its workforce as customers take a more cautious approach to spending. “The Slack acquisition by Salesforce has not changed the trajectory of Salesforce up or down,” said Tim Crawford, CIO strategic adviser at Los Angeles-based enterprise IT advisory firm AVOA. “That’s really the struggle for customers, to maintain the pace with a company like Salesforce,” he said. Forrester’s Ms. Herbert said the recent departures of Mr. Taylor and the Slack executives might signal that Salesforce is shifting the focus back to its core products.
