"A lot of these new guests that are coming in are coming in through the chicken sandwich occasion initially," he said. Wingstop was late to join the so-called chicken sandwich wars, which kicked off when Popeyes launched its spicy chicken sandwich in 2019 to compete with Chick-fil-A. Rivals including McDonald's and Wendy's have also been bolstering up their chicken sandwich offerings in response. Taco Bell hasn't been hurt by customers trading down. Bing Guan/Bloomberg/Getty ImagesAt Taco Bell, customers can buy a combo meal, including a fountain drink, burrito, taco and cinnamon twists for dessert, for about $5. Taco Bell’s website shows a cheesy bean and rice burrito; spicy potato soft taco; and cheesy roll-up available for $1 each. And in the third quarter, customers didn’t only go for the cheapest items, helping keep the Taco Bell’s margins high. Wingstop CEO Michael Skipworth discussed the chicken wings-focused restaurant chain's growth with CNBC's Jim Cramer, saying much of it comes from existing franchisees reinvesting in the business. "If we look back over the restaurants we've opened over the last year, over 90% of those came from our existing franchisees reinvesting, which I think just speaks to the strength of the model," Skipworth said. He added that Wingstop's partnership with companies like DoorDash and Uber Eats is also bringing customers to the business. According to Skipworth, widespread inflation is not hurting the company's franchisees. And it doesn't take a lot of capital to open a Wingstop," he said.

Executives at Burger King and McDonald's praised sales growth driven by chicken menu items. On November 15, Popeyes released its new Blackened Chicken Sandwich, which is not breaded and is seasoned with Cajun and Creole spices. The sandwich chain is explicitly promoting the new sandwich as "reigniting the chicken sandwich wars," which started with the 2019 release of the Popeyes spicy chicken sandwich. The chain further took advantage of reduced chicken prices with a BOGO chicken sandwich deal over Black Friday weekend. Chicken, including the spicy chicken sandwich and McNuggets, has been a "strong growth driver" for McDonald's, CEO Chris Kempczinski told investors in October.
