The nature of illegal lockouts means they are hard to track directly. One of the responding officers calls a sergeant over, who says there's nothing else they can do. While only 14% of lockout calls led to a police report, 86% of calls about shoplifting did. As they walk over, one of the officers tells the other to look up "illegal lockout" on his phone. A 2006 bill that would have defined illegal lockouts for all Illinois residents was defeated.

Andrea Robin Skinner, a daughter of the Canadian Nobel laureate Alice Munro, said that her stepfather sexually abused her as a child — and that her mother knew about it, and chose to stay with him anyway. Skinner, who is now an adult, detailed these accusations in an essay in the Toronto Star on Sunday. According to a separate article in the Toronto Star, Skinner went to the Ontario police, and in 2005, her stepfather, Gerald Fremlin, was charged with indecent assault against her. Because of her mother’s fame, Skinner wrote, “the silence continued.” Munro died on May 13 at 92. “What I wanted was some record of the truth, some public proof that I hadn’t deserved what had happened to me,” Skinner wrote of going to the police in 2005, about 30 years after the abuse began.

But the latest workplace trends — "silent layoffs" and "quiet firing" — could be the most harmful to date. Silent layoffs occur when a company provides staff with severance packages but asks them to keep quiet about the details of their exit. The Panthers were also trying to avoid becoming the first back-to-back Stanley Cup losers since the 1977 and 1978 Boston Bruins. Canada’s Stanley Cup drought has now reached 31 years. Game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and the Florida Panthers will decide which team will lift the famous trophy. It sets up a winner-takes-all final game in what has been a thrilling series. Dylan Holloway added two goals for the Oilers, and Mattias Janmark, Adam Henrique, Darnell Nurse, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ryan McLeod had the others. Instead, the Oilers became the fourth team in a row to win Game 4 to extend a series after dropping the first three games of a Stanley Cup Final. “It only counts as one win,” Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov said. Can crows count much like toddlers do? The research was inspired by toddlers learning to count, said lead study author Diana Liao, a neurobiologist and senior researcher at the Tübingen lab. “They understand abstract numbers … and then plan ahead as they match their behavior to match that number,” Williams said. The study by Liao and her colleagues isn’t even the first to consider whether crows can count. The crows’ counting abilities “seem to exceed the demands which survival makes for such abilities,” he wrote.

CNN —Toward the end of its 35th season, “The Simpsons” made a move that rankled some fans: It killed a longtime resident of Springfield. I would say under 10,” said Matt Selman, sardonic showrunner of “The Simpsons,” in an interview with CNN. There are around 16 writers per season, typically made up of 22 episodes, though this season has just 18 due to the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes. Last month, Sosthand won a Writers Guild Award for the episode, beating out three other nominees from the “Simpsons” writers room. It’s nice that their hard work has been noticed, Selman said, but critical appraisal of “The Simpsons” is always in flux.

The Miss Universe organization and Rose, through Miss USA, did not respond to CNN’s requests for comment. She welcomed Gankiewicz to the Miss USA family telling her to “embrace this moment of influence and let your words carry the power of positive change,” and thanked her corporate partners and sponsors for their “unwavering support.”Rose said that this year’s Miss Teen USA and Miss USA pageants would take place in Los Angeles and would broadcast on the CW network. Why It Matters: Vaccines often arrive too late to stamp out outbreaks. Public health messaging can “be really powerful to control epidemics, even as we’re waiting for things like vaccines to come,” he said. Some experts unrelated to the work were not convinced that behavioral change was largely responsible for stemming the outbreak. “Add in some vaccine-induced immunity in this group and a bit of behavior change, and it will be even more effective,” he said. “As we’ve seen with Covid, the behavioral change only lasts so long,” she said.

The rats were trained to press a button that triggered a camera attached to their cage. ECAL/Augustin LignierAs the two rats — which Lignier named Augustin and Arthur, after himself and his brother — began exploring their new environment, they would randomly touch the button that gave them sugar, Lignier said. ECAL/Augustin LignierTheir antics produced a series of selfies, some of which appeared as if they’d been shot against a clean, white background. Giving randomized rewards in return for taking selfies mirrored the tactics used by social media companies and dating apps to keep users coming back, Lignier said. “I was fascinated by this.”After spending a few days taking selfies, the pet rats went to live with Lignier’s mother in Arles, southern France, until they died and were buried in her back garden.
