Hunter Biden was scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 12 for his conviction on federal gun charges. I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision,” Biden said in his statement. Biden is using his pardon power to ensure Hunter Biden does not spend time in jail as he nears the end of his term in the White House and has no future election to face.

Next month, NASA will get an up-close view of the solar activity as the Parker Solar Probe makes its closest-ever approach to the sun. The active period is likely to continue over the next year, which means more solar storms and spectacular auroras could be in store. “This is definitely the season for big solar storms,” said Kelly Korreck, a program scientist in the heliophysics division at NASA. LONDON — The countryside came to the capital as thousands of farmers packed into London streets around Britain’s Parliament to protest changes to tax rules. Some drove tractors, others brought hay bales, many carried signs saying “no farms, no food.” All were protesting against the new Labour government’s decision to tax inherited agricultural property. Despite the gray skies and wet weather, thousands of farmers gathered in central London. “Ministers claim the inheritance tax cap hits only the rich, but it could put 70,000 farms — big and small — at risk. We are not — claiming that 70,000 farms will shut down or have to pay the tax a year.” The website defines a generation as 40 years.

The offensive is the first time opposition forces have seized territory in Aleppo since 2016, shattering the stalemate of a war that never formally ended. Extremist Islamists including al Qaeda took an interest in Syria, taking up a common cause with the moderate Syrian opposition who did not welcome jihadist involvement. Analysts told CNN that the Syrian rebels are using a vacuum left by the group to advance in Syria. The new grouping is made up of a broad spectrum of opposition forces, from Islamist factions to moderates. The backbone of the SDF are Kurdish fighters from a group known as the Peoples’ Protection Units (YPG), which has previously fought other Syrian opposition groups.

“Frozen liquid items are allowed through the checkpoint as long as they are frozen solid when presented for screening,” a TSA spokesperson confirmed to CNN by email. What to do if your frozen bottle starts to melt? Ultimately, the best advice is to not pack any foods or frozen liquid items into your carry-on luggage that you would be upset to throw away. Some travelers question why someone would bother to freeze a bottle of water before their flight given most airports now have free refilling stations. “While I’ve never personally brought a frozen water bottle through security, there are times when this travel hack makes sense,” he told CNN.

Elon Musk, whose Starlink satellite constellation is the biggest, wields power in the new Trump administration. SpaceX's Starlink and other mega-constellations of satellites could damage the atmosphere in ways we don't yet understand, scientists say. About 100 scientists signed a letter in October asking the Federal Communications Commission, which regulates satellite launches in the US, to pause mega-constellations. A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket carrying 56 Starlink internet satellites launches from Cape Canaveral, Florida. Hummingbirds’ Flight Offers Clues to Improve Drones
  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( Jim Robbins | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Their sophisticated flying abilities have captured the attention of robot designers, especially those studying the use of drones in modern warfare. “Hummingbirds are the best flyers out there,” said Bret Tobalske, professor of biology and director of the Flight Lab at the University of Montana. The Flight Lab, accustomed to looking at the ecology, evolution and biomechanics of bird flight, is part of a broad effort, funded largely by U.S. defense dollars, to build a better robotic hummingbird. “A real hummingbird can fly circles around robotic humming birds,” Dr. Tobalske said. “They can fly circles around real birds too.”

Torrential rain and snow across the country this week could disrupt the record number of travelers expected to be on the roads and in the skies for the Thanksgiving holiday. Waves of storm systems are expected to move through the East Coast this week, threatening to disrupt some Thanksgiving travel on Tuesday and bringing rain and potentially snow on Thanksgiving Day. Forecasters expect it to bring mostly nuisance rain that may slow down some travelers. This week’s event should be weaker, affecting areas farther south in Central and Southern California, rather than in places that are still saturated from last week. Any rain that falls in Los Angeles should be lighter, while the heavier rain of a few inches is likely to fall over areas farther north, like Santa Barbara.

The Israeli military late on Sunday conducted a heavy barrage of airstrikes on the southern outskirts of Beirut where Hezbollah holds sway, with fighter jets racing across the skies above the Lebanese capital and deafening explosions ringing out for miles. The airstrikes followed a series of sweeping evacuation warnings on Sunday by the Israeli military for the area, known as the Dahiya — more warnings than in any other day this month. They also came as Hezbollah fired about 250 projectiles into Israel on Sunday, one of the group’s largest aerial attacks over the past year. Analysts said that Israel’s ramped up attacks in recent days were intended to pressure Hezbollah into accepting a cease-fire on favorable terms. Hezbollah, however, has shown few signs of backing down, and both sides have pledged to keep up their attacks while negotiations are taking place.

They see me as a threat to their power.”The episode has raised eyebrows among security officials, who point to Gabbard’s history of unusual relationships overseas. The circumstances that led to Gabbard’s inclusion on Quiet Skies may be entirely benign, these sources said. Under normal circumstances, one official said, Gabbard would be forced to explain the underlying foreign travel or contacts in question during her background check. Security officials from multiple agencies told CNN that the program is known inside the government for having far laxer standards for inclusion. “TSA’s Quiet Skies program is a risk-based, automated approach to transportation security, to include identifying potential risks and applying enhanced security measures.”The statement continued: “TSA’s Quiet Skies program is not a terrorist watchlist.

Spain's Ministry of Consumer Rights on Friday slapped a $179 million euro ($186 million) fine on five low-budget airlines for "abusive practices" including charging additional cabin luggage fees. Spanish low-cost airline Vueling was ordered to pay 39.2 million euros and EasyJet was fined 29 million euros. Scandinavia's second-largest airline Norwegian and Spanish airline Volotea each received penalties in excess of 1 million euros. The five airlines should discontinue their practice of requiring additional payment for cabin luggage and reserving a seat near a dependent traveler, the ministry said. "We completely disagree with the decision of the Spanish Consumer Ministry and find the proposed sanctions outrageous," an EasyJet statement said, stressing it considers its cabin luggage policy to be aligned with all applicable laws.

"Out of an abundance of caution, the Embassy will be closed, and Embassy employees are being instructed to shelter in place," it said in a security alert, recommending U.S. citizens take shelter if an air alert is announced. Shutting the embassy is not an unprecedented move amid the war, which reached its 1,000th day Tuesday. Delta has served a generic cheeseburger in first class over the past few years to mostly positive reviews online. Spirit Airlines said Monday it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after struggling with losses, growing debt and a failed merger during the post-pandemic travel lull. The deal comes with a commitment of $350 million in equity investment from bondholders, which it said equates to $795 million of outstanding debt. The company's share price fell from £3.22 to $1.15 last week after the Wall Street Journal reported it was preparing to file for bankruptcy protection, closing on $1.07 on Friday. Spirit said last month it would cut jobs and sell 23 older planes in a bid to save $80 million. Industry analysts said at the time that the court's decision left Spirit with few options but to face a likely restructure and bankruptcy.
