Voter turnout among this group is low — less than 8% in the 2020 presidential election, according to FVAP, compared with almost 67% overall.
Overseas voters “can sway an election, especially in the swing states,” said James Lockett, chair of Democrats Abroad Hong Kong.
During the 2022 midterm elections, overseas voters also made the difference in close races in Connecticut, New Hampshire and North Carolina, the DNC said.
Even as Republicans raise concerns about overseas voters, their presidential nominee, former President Donald Trump, appears to be seeking their support.
“You can’t treat overseas Americans as second-class citizens, and I don’t care if they are Republicans, Democrats or independents.”
