CNN —Sen. Tammy Baldwin will win reelection in Wisconsin, CNN projects, in a victory for Senate Democrats trying to defend the so-called blue wall states despite losing them at the presidential level and having already lost their majority in the chamber. Baldwin will be returning for a third term to a dramatically shifted Senate. CNN has not yet projected the other “blue wall” Senate races – in Pennsylvania and Michigan – as of Wednesday afternoon. She also scored the endorsement of the Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, a notable get for a Democrat running statewide. Her victory is a relief for Democrats, who were facing a daunting Senate landscape before this race came on the map. Neither made their history-making potential a key message on the trail, but it was resonant in a state where Black voters – and Black women in particular – are a crucial part of the electorate. CNN —Republican Bernie Moreno will defeat Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, CNN projects, a key pickup for the GOP in a state that’s been trending its way and putting the GOP one step closer to securing the Senate majority. Moreno emerged as the GOP nominee earlier this year after Democrats helped prop him up in the primary, believing he’d be the weakest opponent. Moreno’s GOP allies also tried hitting Brown over transgender athletes in an effort to cast the senator as too liberal for the state. The number of Republican women running for the House this cycle dropped about 36% from 2022, while the number running for Senate dropped by about 45%, according to data from the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers. “With fewer competitive seats up for grabs, fewer candidates in both parties are running overall, but there is still very strong interest and enthusiasm from Republican women recruits,” Danielle Barrow, executive director of Winning for Women, which works to elect GOP women, said in a statement. That began to change after the 2018 midterms – the huge success enjoyed by Democratic women that year inspired more Republican women to run in 2020. Another possible reason why there may be fewer women running is what Dittmar calls toxicity. Quality over quantityThe decline in the number of candidates running, however, doesn’t necessarily mean there will be fewer women coming to Congress next year.

CNN —North Carolina pastor Mark Harris has won the Republican nomination for North Carolina’s 8th Congressional District, making him the likely next member of Congress from this red district some five years after his apparent victory in an earlier House election was thrown out over ballot fraud allegations. CNN —Wisconsin GOP Rep. Mike Gallagher said Saturday he will not seek reelection, making him the latest Republican to announce an exit from Congress as the House GOP looks to save its shrinking majority in November. The House is expected to hold another vote on impeaching Mayorkas as soon as next week, when Majority Leader Steve Scalise returns from receiving cancer treatments. Former President Donald Trump carried the solidly Republican district over Joe Biden by about 15 points in the 2020 presidential election. Over a dozen House Republicans have stated that they will leave Congress at the end of their term. House Republicans currently control 219 seats to Democrats’ 212, with four vacancies.
