There are currently a handful of electric trucks for purchase in the U.S. market: the Tesla Cybertruck, Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T and General Motors' GMC Hummer EV, GMC Sierra Denali and Chevrolet Silverado. The GMC Hummer and Rivian also have SUV versions, which feature similar functions as their pickup counterparts but in different forms. The SUV version is smaller and more manageable to drive than the pickup truck version. When the F-150 Lightning hit the market, it was the first "mainstream" electric truck. The move is the latest sign that electric vehicle production and demand may not be as strong as forecast. GM had been set to begin production of the electric Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra in late 2024 at the suburban Detroit plant. Ford said in July it would slow the ramp-up of electric vehicle production and forecast a full-year loss of $4.5 billion on its EV unit. GM still plans a significant boost in EV production in 2024 including adding a new shift at a Detroit-Hamtramck factory that is currently building EV SUVs and pickup trucks. General Motors said on Tuesday it still plans to end production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV at the end of 2023.

CNN —General Motors is putting off adding a second factory for production of its electric pickups until late 2025, the automaker announced Tuesday. But GM had planned to start producing the electric pickups at an additional Michigan factory, Orion Assembly just north of Detroit, as well. Instead, when those electric vehicles go out of production at the end of this year, the factory will not shift quickly to making the trucks. General MotorsGM’s decision will result in fewer electric pickups being built next year but the automaker declined to discuss the extent of a reduction. GM had announced, in 2022, that it would spend $4 billion to convert Orion Assembly to make the electric trucks.

The company says it will reach 400,000 cumulative units of EV production by early 2024 and that its EV business will reach profitability by 2025. "They have dozens of EV models over the next two to three years. watch nowAmong analysts who believe the stock is due for a bigger drop, expected EV sales disappointment is among the factors. GM expects to get 400 miles of range from its electric trucks. That’s one reason why having a lot of range can be an especially good thing in an electric truck. The pickup truck battle of numbers isn’t just limited to power and pulling, however. Even the Ram TRX, a pickup designed for high-speed desert driving, has a 702-horsepower V8 engine, only slightly more power than the Ram REV. Essentially a plug-in hybrid, that truck will be for customers who aren’t ready to trust a fully electric truck.
CNN —Following an issue with a battery fire during testing, Ford will restart production of its popular F-150 Lightning electric pickup on Monday, March 13, the company announced Thursday. During pre-delivery inspections, one of the trucks caught fire, according to Ford, and the company halted production and deliveries of the F-150. In the coming days, the new battery cells will be assembled into the battery packs that Ford uses to build the trucks. Stellantis is also supposed to begin production of the Ram 1500 Rev electric truck later next year, as well. The automaker is also building production facilities in Kentucky and Tennessee to build electric vehicle batteries and electric trucks.
What’s happening: Investors will get some market direction clarity on Tuesday morning with the release of key inflation data. It’s not all about the Fed: Traders are infatuated with CPI, but it’s likely going to affect markets more than it will future Fed policy. “CPI is the big inflation report that affects markets more than any other,” he said. Even beyond housing, the services sector has seen year-over-year inflation higher than 3.9% every month since March 2021, said Chaudhuri. And as Powell noted in Washington last week, the stickiness of core services inflation is his greatest concern.

The electric Ram truck is expected to enter an increasingly crowded segment of electric pickups that already includes the GMC Hummer EV, Ford F-150 Lightning, Lordstown Endurance and smaller Rivian R1T. The high-end Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 boasts 754 horsepower and an estimated range of 400 miles. When the battery pack is depleted, a DC fast charger can add about 100 miles of range in 10 minutes, GM said. General Motors unveiled its latest electric pickup, the new electric GMC Sierra, and began taking reservations for a fully-loaded $107,000 version, called Sierra EV Denali Edition 1, on Thursday. The automaker expects to begin shipping the Edition 1 in early 2024 and to add lower-priced versions of the Sierra EV — starting at around $50,000 — later that year. It says the pickup will offer buyers something different when it begins arriving at dealers, even though it shares much of its technology with GMC's Hummer EV pickup and SUV and the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV. One of the biggest differences between the GMC's wild Hummer EV and the new electric Sierra might be the new truck's traditional pickup shape. "With the Hummer EV, we found that 70% of customers with reservations are new to EVs, and about 75% of them are new to the GMC brand."

(CNN) General Motors is investing $760 million in its Toledo Propulsion Systems factory, which builds transmissions for gas-powered vehicles, so that it can make electric drive units for electric vehicles, too. The drive units will be used in GM electric trucks, the automaker said, including the GMC Hummer EV, which is currently in production, and the upcoming Chevrolet Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV. It will be GM's first US engine or transmission factory adapted for electric vehicle-related production. Electric drive units include an electric motor, one-speed transmission and power electronics that bring power to and from the motor. For the now, at least, the factory will continue building transmissions for front- and rear-wheel-drive gas-powered vehicles along with the electric drive units, GM spokesman Dan Flores said.
