Norway's royal family found itself embroiled in an intensifying scandal Tuesday after the son of the country's crown princess was arrested on suspicion of rape. American women in general are having children later, but the delay is most pronounced among the most educated. Even religious conservatives, who are biblically motivated to be fruitful and multiply, are starting families later and more often having only one child. So what will the coming reign of the only child mean for America? Just as having children is no longer seen as a required stage of adulthood, having siblings will no longer be a de facto part of childhood.

CNN —Mary DeBardelaben once made a promise to her grandmother’s portrait hanging on the sage green wall in her living room. Over the years, Mary DeBardelaben reached out to an organization that documented civil rights abuses in the Jim Crow era but without much success. It was stuffed with 69 pages of federal documents detailing Hattie DeBardelaben’s final moments. Mary DeBardelaben keeps a binder of everything she's learned about her grandmother, including this March 1945 newspaper story about her killing. As in the other photos, Hattie DeBardelaben stares at the camera without any hint of a smile.
