Haley Joel Osment Sees Contentment
  + stars: | 2024-08-13 | by ( Melena Ryzik | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Haley Joel Osment’s childhood memories are not like other people’s. A phalanx of Osment clones, made for that movie, are still floating around — he heard they might have ended up stockpiled in Peter Jackson’s trove of memorabilia in New Zealand. If the apocalypse happens, Osment jokes, that preteen version of him will survive. It is, in any case, the form in which many fans know him best — especially as the notably named Cole Sear, the teary-eyed center of “The Sixth Sense,” M. Night Shyamalan’s blockbuster supernatural thriller from August 1999. It was a phrase so potent that, 25 years after its arrival, it is a Kendrick Lamar lyric — on a Drake diss track, no less.

Read previewDirector M. Night Shyamalan's new thriller, "Trap," is filled with twists and turns, but its premise is grounded in a real-life sting operation that took place in the '80s. Here's how the sting operation partly inspired Shyamalan's film. Related storiesAccording to The Washington Post, Operation Sting led to 144 arrests. Shyamalan said that the sting operation was 'hilarious' and the absurdity of the fakeout stuck with himHartnett as Cooper and Donoghue as Riley in "Trap." "Trap" isn't a comedy by any means, but the dark humor of Operation Flagship informed the movie.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is dominating the charts again after earning $28.3 million on Friday. Rivals are putting the Disney release at a 55% drop though, demonstrating that “Deadpool & Wolverine” has immense appeal beyond Marvel diehards. “Deadpool & Wolverine” looks to blast past that figure in only in its second weekend and there’s no real signs of slowing down after that. Universal also has another top five slot with “Despicable Me 4,” still drawing a crowd in its fifth weekend of release. Total domestic gross surpassed $300 million earlier this week — one of only three titles this year to notch that milestone.

Shyamalan's biggest cinematic failure was "The Last Airbender," an adaptation of a beloved animated series. Together, with Katara (Nicola Peltz Beckham) and Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), Aang fends off enemies, including Prince Zuko (Dev Patel), seeking to control and harness his powers. While the film's source material is generally considered one of the best animated series of the 2000s, M. Night Shyamalan's adaptation was derided as a boring, slow-moving mess that woefully underutilized Patel, a talented performer who had catapulted to stardom two years earlier with "Slumdog Millionaire." "It is incredible how awful the once feted director M. Night Shyamalan has become and how he is still allowed to make big-budget films," wrote The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw. "I didn't think it was possible for him to make something worse than his 'Lady in the Water' or 'The Happening.'

‘Summer Camp’ (May 31)Kathy Bates, Diane Keaton and Alfre Woodard in "Summer Camp." The movie, costarring Vanessa Hudgens, follows 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” (it seems that title’s promise didn’t quite stick). The film looks dutifully creepy, and stars the talented Dakota Fanning (“Ripley”) as an artist who finds herself in a strange forest in Ireland. ‘Cuckoo’ (August 2)Hunter Schafer in “Cuckoo.” NEONStarring “Euphoria’s” Hunter Schafer in her first lead film role, this horror film looks positively creepy and a bit, well, cuckoo. ‘Blink Twice’ (August 23)A scene from “Blink Twice.” MGMJam packed with a starry cast, “Blink Twice” looks like a perfect late summer movie – attractive people, elaborate action sequences, and mindless mayhem.

Two writers are suing OpenAI, accusing the company of ingesting their books to train ChatGPT. A law professor anticipates more lawsuits involving copyright law and generative AI in the future. Two award-winning authors recently sued OpenAI, accusing the generative-AI bastion of violating copyright law by using their published books to train ChatGPT without their consent. The suit is the latest example of tension between creatives and generative AI tools capable of producing text and images in seconds. Daniel Gervais, a law professor at Vanderbilt University, told Insider that the writers' lawsuit is one of a handful of copyright cases against generative AI tools nationwide.

A white powder was found inside the White House late Sunday, which led to a temporary closure. Firefighters identified the material as "cocaine hydrochloride," the Washington Post reported. The Secret Service told Reuters an "unknown" item was indeed found there. The material was found in the West Wing, the spokesperson added, which is a part of the White House connected to the executive mansion, where the president lives. According to the Washington Post, a Washington DC firefighter on the hazardous materials team said the test results for the substance showed "a yellow bar saying cocaine hydrochloride."

Massachusetts-based writers Paul Tremblay and Mona Awad said ChatGPT mined data copied from thousands of books without permission, infringing the authors' copyrights. Several legal challenges have been filed over material used to train cutting-edge AI systems. ChatGPT and other generative AI systems create content using large amounts of data scraped from the internet. Tremblay and Awad's lawsuit said books are a "key ingredient" because they offer the "best examples of high-quality longform writing." The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount of money damages on behalf of a nationwide class of copyright owners whose works OpenAI allegedly misused.

It's the latest evolution in variable pricing at movie theaters. AMC Theatres, the largest theater chain in the world, announced new pricing variations for seating on Monday in an imitative called Sightline at AMC. The variable pricing is for any showtime after 4 pm, and doesn't apply to "Discount Tuesdays," AMC said. Here's the catch: Value Sightline is only available for members of AMC's subscription program, AMC Stubs A-List. But it's also the latest evolution of variable pricing at movie theaters — which has until now been more focused on charging different prices based on the movie or format, and not necessarily on seat location.

M. Night Shyamalan is one of the few filmmakers of his generation who has made himself a brand. If his surname were a bit shorter, he might even have made himself a household adjective by now. To buy a ticket for one of Mr. Shyamalan’s films is to accept an invitation to be wowed by a deliriously intriguing premise and, in the third act, to witness with delight the world being turned upside down. Mr. Shyamalan also carries the unfortunate distinction of having perpetrated more terrible movies than practically anyone else in his class of blockbuster auteurs: “The Village,” “Lady in the Water,” “The Last Airbender,” “After Earth.” This list is not comprehensive. Once he made a thriller about murderous trees (“The Happening”) whose script seemed as though it got lost on the way to Mel Brooks ’s office.

Whether leaving his most iconic character behind dings his marketability as a star or not, Bautista isn't concerned. "I don't care about the spotlight, I don't care about fame.
Universal film chief Donna Langley says movies will never go back to "those exclusive traditional windows" in theaters. "I would love to see a female 'Fast,'" she said about the future of the "Fast & Furious" franchise.
