TOYKO — A Japanese man said to have spent the world’s longest time on death row was cleared in a retrial of the 1966 murders of four people on Thursday, ending his family’s search for justice for a wrongful conviction. On Thursday, the Shizuoka district court acquitted the former boxer. He spent 48 years behind bars — more than 45 of them on death row — making him the world’s longest-serving death row inmate, according to the rights group, Amnesty International. Hakamata’s lawyers had argued that DNA tests on bloodstained clothing said to be their client’s showed the blood was not his. Amnesty International hailed the exoneration as a “pivotal moment for justice” and urged Japan to scrap the death penalty.

Tokyo CNN —A beachgoer who was swept 80 kilometers (50 miles) out to sea in a floating ring has been rescued off Japan’s east coast some 36 hours after she went missing, authorities said. She had been spotted earlier by a cargo ship crew, which radioed the tanker for help, the coast guard added. The coast guard flew the woman by helicopter to the city of Yokohama, where she was taken to the hospital for assessment following her overnight ordeal. There is no need for hospitalization,” the coast guard said. Authorities said the woman was likely swept away by currents and moderately strong winds, NHK reported.

Similar weather patterns have caused flooding and landslides in the past, most notably in the summer of 2018, when more than 200 people were killed in western Japan. A video of a frilled shark is being shared online with claims that it is 80 million years old. The frilled shark is sometimes called a living fossil due to its lineage that goes back 80 million years. A Twitter post of the video (here ) with the description “Prehistoric 80 million year old shark also known as “the frilled shark” discovered in Awashima, Japan” posted on Oct. 14, 2022 had over 7.8 million views as of writing. A copy of it can be seen (here ), and it shows the same video seen in the posts being shared. However, a frilled shark has a lifespan of about 25 years, as discussed ( here ) and its lineage goes back almost 100 million years (here ).
